The Pioneer Press has endorsed three incumbents for “Sewer Board”, that is, commisioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. The paper touts efforts at “use of short-distance electric cars, the distribution of barrels to capture rain water that county residents can then reuse for gardening and landscaping purposes” and top priorities such as “environmental protection”. It is baffling to read that the same people who managed the 900 Million Gallons of raw Sewage poured into Lake Michigan last month, are somehow described as environmentally responsible due to support for electric cars. The Deep Tunnel project is the least tractable public works in a Water District with a long history of uncontrolled spending and lack of results. Even after spending $3 billion on this 30 year project, the Metropolitan area still suffers from severe flooding, with no end in sight. The MWRD has an answer though. Dumping Sewage onto landfill trash sounds like a bad idea; one would think that combining the two waste streams would produce something even worse. Not so, says Viridis Waste Control LLC . They have developed a process that turns this unlikely combination into a green solution. It turns out that you can make landfill garbage biodegrade more quickly when you over it with septage (the material that is pumped out of septic tanks… let’s not be any more specific). Faster garbage biodegradation means a longer lifetime for the landfill, which saves land which would otherwise be lost to landfill use. This is also a better use for septage, which is often applied to agricultural fields. This can lead to contamination of crops, livestock, and the water table. The septage may also accelerate methane production, which is a benefit if the landfill is set up to capture landfill gases for power production. W hat's wrong with most of the commentators in the mainstream media? Following Sarah Palin's less-than-a-complete-train-wreck performance (which is the operative word) in Thursday's debate, one after another of them said that she had "passed the test"--that she had shown that she is competent to be president. She's "credentialed" now, they tell us. Huh? Surely most of them know better. Yes, Governor Palin showed that she is not an imbecile. But that hardly means that she demonstrated that she is prepared to be president (as the incumbent has so forcefully shown). Not being stupid doesn't equate to not being ignorant . "Everybody's ignorant, only on different subjects," Will Rogers rightly said. The problem is that the subjects on which Sarah Palin is ignorant are precisely those on which a president must be knowledgeable. Reciting memorized answers to questions you ask yourself does not constitute passing a test. So why are so many MSM pundits acting as if Mrs. Palin did well and "passed the test"? The only plausible explanation is that they are engaging in self censorship in an attempt to counter the constant drumbeat from the Sewage Stream Media (SSW)--Faux News, Limbaugh, Drudge, et. al., that they have a "liberal bias." Too many of them have been intimidated by the right wing. The SSW's shot across Gwen Ifill's bow the day before the debate appeared to have led her to avoid asking Governor Palin for any specifics or examples. ...
