It's the top of the second, Margaret Ream winds up, and delivers the pitch. Deloris Kalen steps up to the plate, swings and misses. "Oh nuts," blurts out the 83-year-old Genoa Township woman. The women are playing Wii, donated to the Howell Area Parks and Recreation Authority Senior Center by parishioners of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church. And they're having a blast. What a nice place to hang out with your friends. The Georgetown Senior Center is about to celebrate its 15th year of offering a place to socialize over a hot lunch, enjoy entertainment events, work on projects together, take classes, learn important news from visiting speakers, and get some vital health services for free. On Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. the anniversary celebration kicks off in the downstairs fellowship hall at the First Congregational Church across from Town Hall, with a music and comedy performance by Rockin’ Ron Toleos. A reception with appetizers will follow at 11 a.m., and the anniversary lunch will follow the reception at 11:30 a.m. It’s an event worth celebrating, and COA Director Cathleen Ranshaw-Fiorello plans to do exactly that, with help from a grant from the Georgetown Cultural Council to hire Rockin’ Ron with his pop tunes, golden oldies, and some Elvis. (This edition of the paper comes out too late for the lunch reservation deadline, but Ranshaw-Fiorello welcomes everyone to the free entertainment and the anniversary reception.) Having a place to socialize is a great gift to Senior citizens, and the COA is grateful to the church for allowing them to rent this space, since the fellowship kitchen allows regular hot lunches to be served. There are plenty of tables in the hall for bingo games, a lectern for guest speakers, and a nice piano for visiting musicians. Ranshaw-Fiorello says the COA’s vision is to evol ...

Montgomery County’s Holiday Park Multiservice Senior Center, part of the County’s Department of Recreation, has collaborated with Suburban Hospital on a project that brings smiles and joy to kids with cancer or other life changing illnesses. Known as the pillowcase initiative, the project was created by Cindy Kerr of Philadelphia, PA, who began making pillowcases for her son, Ryan, while he was receiving cancer treatment. She expanded her project and started making the pillowcases for other children and soon, seniors joined the ranks of the creators. To date, the program has produced more than 20,000 pillowcases for sick children across the United States and Canada. Kerr will visit Holiday Park Senior Center, 3950 Ferrara Drive, Wheaton, on Tuesday, September 16 at 11 a.m. to meet and thank the many local seniors who have participated in this project. Montgomery County seniors became involved when Suburban Hospital nurse Jamie Borns, who is bas ...more ...
