As a journeyman left-hander for the woeful Washington Senators of the 1950s, Chuck Stobbs had few moments of shining glory. He won 15 games for the lowly Nats in 1956 but was best known for throwing a pitch that might have traveled farther than any other baseball in big-league history. ...

by Katie Fretland Seven Senators, including Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), sent a letter to President Bush today endorsing a limited diplomatic presence in Iran. Durbin joins Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.), Carl Levin (D-Mich.), Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Russ Feingold (D-Wisc.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.) in support of opening an interests section in the country that has been at odds with the West over its nuclear weapons programs. "We know that a hands-off approach has isolated us and strengthened Iran," Kerry said. "The administration's decision to reverse course and join direct talks with Tehran is the right one, however late. While the United States has remained on the sidelines and outsourced our diplomacy to Europe, Iran used that time to continue to master the nuclear fuel cycle and get closer to a nuclear weapons capability. Even if direct dialogue fails to reach an agreement, we will be armed with new leverage that strengthens our hand with Europe, Russia, and China to impose tougher sanctions and begin to reverse this dynamic." Durbin said the United States should continue to work with its allies to stop Iran's nuclear weapons program, while reaching out to the Iranian people and expanding diplomacy in the region. Iran has established a diplomatic mission at the United Nations and an interest section in Washington. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said Tehran would consider a request from the U.S. go ...

They disagree on the severity of Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s state budget cuts, how he made them and what to do next about them. But local Democratic and Republican Senators agree that the Illinois Senate won’t be reconvening soon at the Capitol to try to sort out the mess left behind. Senators from the Springfield, Peoria and Rockford areas predict nothing will happen because Senate leaders insist they will not return to the Capitol until the fall. That creates months of uncertainty for state government and taxpayers. “I think the chances of us coming back in are slim and none,” said Sen. Gary Dahl, R-Granville. Blagojevich made $1.4 billion in budget cuts two weeks ago to balance a spending plan that he says was more than $2 billion in the red. He called legislators into special session to fix the problem before the cuts kicked in, but they refused. The House then came back last week and voted to restore about $480 million in cuts. The Senate has until the end of this month to take up what the House voted to restore, or all the cuts will stand. Lawmakers aren’t due back to town until the November veto session, when they could try to restore the cuts. Hospitals, substance abuse treatment centers and other advocates who fear major money problems before November are calling and e-mailing Senators. Some groups are even holding public protests. But Jones made it clear two weeks ago the Senate would come back only if the House passed meas ...

Yet more evidence of just how abysmal the GOP brand is these days? Nine of 12 targeted Republicans running in the most competitive Senate races this fall are either skipping the Republican convention in St. Paul, Minn., or have not decided whether to attend. Among those who will not attend are Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska, who is not close to presumptive presidential nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona, and Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, who is a McCain loyalist. Stevens and Collins will use the convention week to focus on their campaigns. Also sending regrets is former Rep. Bob Schaffer of Colorado, running for the seat being vacated by retiring GOP Sen. Wayne Allard. Six others -- Sens. Roger Wicker of Mississippi, John Sununu of New Hampshire, Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina and Gordon Smith of Oregon and challengers John Kennedy of Louisiana and Rep. Steve Pearce of New Mexico are still on the fence. Their spokesman offered responses ranging from "there are no plans yet" to "no decisions have been made." By contrast, most of the Dems in those races will be going to the Dem convention. Pretty telling stuff. ...
