Baseball's drug-testing program was threatened when federal prosecutors seized player records and samples four years ago, baseball commissioner Bud Selig said in a letter to Congress released Thursday. The seizure of the 2003 test results jeopardized the program's confidentiality and caused a delay in the start of testing in 2004, Selig and union head Donald Fehr told Reps. ...

WASHINGTON, D.C.  Bud Selig, commissioner of baseball and general manager of Selig GMC-Buick, a car and truck dealership, today promised a crackdown on major league baseball players who jaywalk following high-profile arrests of  Boston Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez in Seattle and a news report linking Yankee pitcher Joba Chamberlain to a New Jersey organized crime family that crosses the streets of New York's Little Italy without looking both ways. Selig:  "Senator, it may look like I'm picking, but I'm only scratching." "Our fans deserve to know that the players their kids look up to are crossing at the green, and not in between," Selig said in a conference call with sports reporters and traffic safety officers.  "I was captain of my school crossing guard in 7th grade, and I take this personally." "I told the Commissioner, you know, blow it out your shorts." Ramirez was cited in Seattle for walking against a red light, a misdemeanor in a city that appears friendly on the surface, but which is governed by a nine-person city council composed largely of members of the Grunge-Espresso Axis, a neo-fascist group that worships Kurt Cobain.   Cobain:  "Dude--I can't even see the crosswalk." Chamberlain was cited for walking four members of the Toronto Blue Jays on June 8th , and vowed to appeal his fine.  "I walked a bunch of Jays, I didn't jaywalk," Chamberlain said.  "There's a big difference." Anybody notice how the Milwaukee Brewers blossomed into perennial contenders as soon as Bud Selig sold the team? All it required was a relatively modest investment, pushing the Brewers’ payroll to just over $80 million and placing them 15th among 30 major league teams in terms of total player salaries. Average attendance is up to 36,628, 10th best in the majors, an amazing figure when you consider the size of Milwaukee and its proximity to Chicago and the Cubs. So Selig was right about saving baseball in Milwaukee, even as he was killing the franchise for years with his short-sighted stinginess. This leads one to wonder, of course, how Selig was ever viewed as enough of a visionary to become baseball commissioner in the first place. He’s a decent guy who wants to do the right thing, but is rarely ahead of the curve. We’ve seen that with the drug testing, with Chief Wahoo, and with late starting times of playoff games. His partnerships with environmental groups and charities are notable, admirable exceptions. But all in all, Selig gets a C-plus. He has run baseball a lot like he ran the Brewers - with minimal risk, and minimal returns. In New York, baseball remains king. We love the sport far more than football, which is great credit to our city. But for this, Selig deserves absolutely no credit. Baseball is in our city’s DNA, and we’ve been lucky enough to have owners around here with greater ambitions than Selig ever dreamed in Milwa ...
