Anybody notice how the Milwaukee Brewers blossomed into perennial contenders as soon as Bud Selig sold the team? All it required was a relatively modest investment, pushing the Brewers’ payroll to just over $80 million and placing them 15th among 30 major league teams in terms of total player salaries. Average attendance is up to 36,628, 10th best in the majors, an amazing figure when you consider the size of Milwaukee and its proximity to Chicago and the Cubs. So Selig was right about saving baseball in Milwaukee, even as he was killing the franchise for years with his short-sighted stinginess. This leads one to wonder, of course, how Selig was ever viewed as enough of a visionary to become baseball commissioner in the first place. He’s a decent guy who wants to do the right thing, but is rarely ahead of the curve. We’ve seen that with the drug testing, with Chief Wahoo, and with late starting times of playoff games. His partnerships with environmental groups and charities are notable, admirable exceptions. But all in all, Selig gets a C-plus. He has run baseball a lot like he ran the Brewers - with minimal risk, and minimal returns. In New York, baseball remains king. We love the sport far more than football, which is great credit to our city. But for this, Selig deserves absolutely no credit.
