As a new parent, watching your infant suffer with a Seizure can not only be devastating, but leave you feeling helpless and inadequate as a parent. The first time you see your infant having a Seizure is usually the worst and it is not until you understand what is happening and what to do that you will feel more comfortable handling the situation. Infant seizures are not uncommon and usually the baby will be fine afterwards. Seizures will only last a few minutes and eventually will stop without any intervention. These seizures or convulsions are the result of abnormal brain nerve cell activity that causes unconsciousness, rigidity in the arms and legs, and twitching of the face or limbs. Most infant seizures are related to fevers, however, recurrent seizures with no fever may indicate a Seizure disorder and should be diagnosed by a doctor or pediatrician. Febrile Seizures Febrile seizures have a short duration of five minutes or less, are triggered by a high fever and usually indicate an underlying illness. They can be sudden, but after the first episode do not usually reoccur. What’s important here is to find out what the underlying illness is that is creating the high fever. An Arizona school violated the constitutional rights of a 13-year-old school girl when it subjected her to a strip search to see if she was carrying the pain reliever ibuprofen, a narrowly divided federal appeals court ruled last Friday. Lower courts had held that the school did not violate Fourth Amendment strictures against unreasonable searches and seizures because officials have a legitimate interest in protecting students from prescription drugs. Ibuprofen is available in lower doses as a non-prescription drug and is found in common medications such as Advil and Motrin to treat ailments like cramps and headaches. Higher doses of the drug require a prescription. The ruling came in Redding v. Stafford Unified School District , in which honor student Savana Redding sued the district over the 2003 search. On the day in question, Safford Middle School Principal Kerry Wilson found two prescription strength ibuprofen tablets in the possession of one of Redding's classmates, who fingered her as the source. After escorting Redding to his office, Wilson informed her of the accusation, which she denied. Redding then agreed to a search of her possessions, which turned up nothing. Suicide is more frequent in patients with epilepsy than in the general population. As suicide is a major issue in both epileptic and depressive patients, it is critical to treat aggressively any psychiatric illness with suicidal ideation. We describe two patients who, after temporal lobe surgery, developed a serious bipolar disorder that necessitated electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), despite better Seizure control. Unfortunately they were not able to commit to a regular treatment plan with their psychiatrists to prevent a suicide. These patients underwent a course of ECT treatments. After the ECT regimen, acute suicidal intent remitted and was replaced by chronic suicidal ideation without active intent or plan. The patients were then able to commit to a treatment plan regarding their medications and control visits. These cases represent the safe utilization of ECT as a rapid and effective treatment option for bipolar disorder with suicide ideation following epilepsy surgery.
