One of the most contentious issues surrounding a long-term U.S.-Iraq Security agreement is whether private Security Contractors should receive blanket legal immunity from Iraqi laws. clipped by: papananook Clip Source: www.politico.com Down in the 12th paragraph of a story on page A17 of the Post today is the news that the era of immunity for Security Contractors in Iraq is drawing to a close. As it stands today, the more than 100,000 private Security Contractors in Iraq, working for companies such as Blackwater, are immune from Iraqi law. The Iraqis have long been pushing the argument that laws exist for a reason — and should most especially be applied to men roaming a foreign country armed to the teeth. Both high-profile and low-profile incidents of violence have turned Iraqi political opinion against the Contractors and Iraqi negotiators have been pressing the White House hard to revoke their immunity as part of the ongoing negotiations over U.S. troop presence in Iraq. They appear to have succeeded. From the Post: "Iraq's insistence that its laws should prevail stems largely from the excesses of private U.S. Security Contractors, whom negotiators have agreed would be subject to Iraqi law." ...

Looks like Nagin isn't going to get his 'chocolate city' after all. Predictions: * This time the loldome is going to get flattened, or at least have the roof torn off. * Blame will be placed on climate change (global warming is so 2005), and thus, George Bush. * Remember last time when the good people of New Orleans were shooting at the national guard? This time they'll be shooting at Blackwater Security Contractors, who will not hesitate to shoot back. Expect to hear about 'grave human rights abuses', etc. * More FEMA debit cards will be handed out, promptly spent on casinos and Louis Vuitton handbags. * Both candidates will be airlifted in for approximately 2 hours for photo ops. ... The CBO report (.pdf) puts the first number I’ve seen on the number of “Security Contractors” in the Iraq theater: 30,000. That’s one mercenary for every six U.S. soldiers. The cost rationale: The costs of a private Security contract are comparable with those of a U.S. military unit performing similar functions. During peacetime, however, the private Security contract would not [...] ... Source: searchcio.techtarget.com --- 7 days ago
