For most, using a computer in a shared environment is commonplace. Whether it’s the family computer shared by everyone or a computer just for the children, you are familiar with the challenges introduced by this particular setup. Specifically, I’m going to pose the question - are your files safe from others accidentally deleting them? With [...] ... Source: www.webhostingtalk.com --- 18 days ago
Hello. :) Working on my first dedi. Went to transfer one of my sites, found that PHP could not write to the directory without permissions changed to 0777. It's my understanding that in general this is something that should be avoided. I remember one of my old hosts (Hostgator) installing PHPSuexec, and it allowed PHP to run as a user that avoided that whole issue. I couldn't find PHPsuexec per se, but I did find this article with that in the title, explaining how to install and configure suPHP, and it used PHPsuexec in the title: http://alain.knaff.lu/howto/PhpSuexec/ 1) Are suPHP and PHPsuexec referring to the same thing? 2) The server is a dedi, I don't share it with anyone. I am running virtual hosts, but they are all running under the same user atm. Is PHPsuexec what I should be looking at? Or do I simply have something misconfigured somewhere? The user that the server is running under is the owner of the Folders, but it is my understanding that PHP doesn't run as that user. PHPsuexec (or suPHP) changes that, right? 3) Since I am the only user on the server, is there a reason I would want to set up individual users for each virtual server? 4) Are there any good recent tutorials on getting mod_security installed and running? The one in the tutorials subforum here is over 2 years old. Is the info in there still relevant? 5) Are there any good tutorials or quick start guides for setting up and Securing a dedi? Specs of my box, in cas ...

First, God Bless the victims of 9/11 and their families. Second, God Bless the police and firefighters and everyone else that ran INTO the buildings.... Third, God Bless everyone that assisted, in any way during or after the ordeal. Fourth, God Bless America. September 11, 2001 started out like any other day. I was on active duty with the Navy at the Richmond Navy and Marine Corp Reserve Center. I was on ADSW, aka Active Duty Special Work, being the Honor Guard at Veterans' funerals. I was on my way to find out what was scheduled for the day. I remember the time exactly. It was 0854 hours. I was passing the conference room, noticing at first, only that the room was filled with the "gunnies" from the Marine Corps Reserve section from across the hall. Then I saw what they were watching...one of the World Trade Center towers was on fire. One Gunny told me that a terrible accident had happened, but that was all that he knew. And so we watched.... And six minutes later, we were at war. We now knew that the crash had been no accident. The Marines, even before the debris had hit the ground in NYC, began Securing the building and opening the armory. And then they called their superiors. Over the next few weeks, they called in Reservists, in case they were needed. The gates were closed and armed guards posted. One of my most cherished possessions is the Letter of Appreciation in a RED award folder that I have among my blue Navy award Folders, wh ... Source: mctalex.blogspot.com --- 92 days ago
This is effectively the debate going on in my virtual classroom right now. One of the questions in Assessment 3-1 triggered the debate, as two of my students didn't choose UAC as a possible cause of a security related issue and two did. The one side is arguing based on the material in the book. Several questions are expecting a textbook answer and UAC is explicity referred to in a paragraph above the security related issues and not under the security related heading. This is the way I see it: UAC is based on controlling access to ressources based on which privileges a user has at the time of executing a program. with UAC on, that would be the least priviliges required to run an applicaiton. Priviliges mean effectively permissions on files, settings and Folders. When we talk about security we usually differentiate between physical security, Securing access to the data and Securing the information itself. We put our servers into locked rooms to secure the physical aspect We put firewalls and passwords in place to secure access to the data We put encryption in place to secure the information itself contained in the data. Where does UAC belong? in the middle section. Securing access to data. By requesting elevated permissions or even an username and password to continue executing a piece of code or accessing a certain file or setting, we have another layer of access security in place to protect our systems. Thus when anybody asks me if UAC ... Source: homepage.mac.com --- 94 days ago

My collection of Embossing Folders for Cuttlebug is growing, so today I am showing you my storage solution for them. The altered tin is 6 1/4" wide, x 5" tall 4". The book plate is by Basic Grey. I have made index sheets that are embossed with each folder and indexed using the round tab punch. The index sheets are 1/4 sheets of CS. I was making them pretty and attaching the tabs with brads at one point, but I am now just stapeling them to the tops to save time. The cooresponding folder is filed behind each index sheet. The tin holds 24 Folders & index sheets and is quite snug now. I am working on tin #2 and will categorize them by style when done. I just got the latest embossing borders and wasn't sure how to store them at first. This is working for me right now. I just took a scrap of white CS slightly smaller than 1/4 sheet and slid the Folders over the CS. They are held in place with binder clips. I label each folder when making labels for my index tabs for the Folders so I can quickly reference the name when uploading details for a project and to file them quickly too. My little Folders are stored much the same way. I fashioned sleeves by cutting up business card page protectors and Securing to CS with eyelets. The outside ends are open to slide the Folders in. You have seen how I store my Folders, now it's your turn to find a system to make it work for you. Get organized! For past Make it work Wednesday editions, foll ...
