"A pool is a like a pyramid," writes Bill Lowe, "balanced on its tip. It wants to fall over and become a pond." His recent e-mail continues, "You work all the time to keep it clean, clear and blue. I quit trying." And so another homeowner eschews the joys of backyard swimming and instead turns it into a habitat for a few large koi, a ton of goldfish and "a number of shebumpkins." Bill continues, "This is a real knee-slapper joke in the koi community; they're koi-goldfish crosses." And what used to be his hot tub now has lotus, giant reed, papyrus, and a few water lilies growing, all of which seem to be faring quite well in our TP member's Shreveport, La. home. "It should have been a part of Texas," writes our irrepressible Louisiana gardener, "but isn't." I can't imagine there could have been anything as gorgeous as this before the hot tub became a pond (no offense, Lowe family). "I like her little hook," Bill says about the bee. "And I also like the yellow of the pollen on the leaves; it had rained the night before." photo credit: Bill Lowe   This conversion from pool to pond has any number of precedents, but the one I'm most familiar with is in the otherworldly Montecito garden once the home of Ganna Walska. It's called Lotusland, and if you've never heard of it, this is your lucky day. You may also think yourself lucky if you're among those who've switched from swimming pool to water feature. Or maybe you converted back? Do tel ...

We've been pretty critical of Second Life in the past. That's mostly because if your business isn't selling virtual genitalia , you're probably not making any money in the virtual world. But we got to give credit to Second Life owner Linden Lab for recognizing that their world is an ad-filled mess. In a blog post this week, the company announced that it was going to introduce 'zoning' to the virtual world, which means exactly what it does in the real world - some land will be zoned as residential, other as commercial. Why? Mostly because of the prevalence of ad farms -- plots of land that are chock full of ads for other businesses in the Second Life. Users don't like these eyesores, with good reason, so quarantining them is probably the right move. Lawmakers restored more than $1 million to next year's budget for MetroWest programs, projects and organizations during Thursday night's cram session, officials said yesterday. Marlborough saw $100,000 in earmarks restored after Gov. Deval Patrick vetoed the spending, including $25,000 for the Marlborough Community Development Corporation and $75,000 for Marlborough 2010. "In these uncertain fiscal times, it is particularly important to secure funds which will leverage further economic development projects in Marlborough and therefore create permanent full-time jobs for residents," state Sen. Pam Resor, D-Acton, said in a statement. Marlborough 2010, a quasi-public economic development agency, will likely use the money on initiatives to boost travel and tourism, especially downtown, said Executive Director John Riordan. The Community Development Corporation, meanwhile, will use some of the money for day-to-day operations and to hire a new executive director to replace Trish Settles, who left in the spring. "This is essential money for us for the basic operations of our organization," said Chris O'Keeffe, president of the board of directors. "We were just making plans of what state of hibernation we would have to go into without it." Riordan said Marlborough 2010 will likely use some of the money to partner with Olde Marlborough Inc. to host the "Taste of Marlborough," an event held for the first time this year in which local resta ...

It occurred to me just the other day that NOAA's Eric Hackathorn , whom I had met last year at ISDE5 , had then said that he was thinking of making a programmable virtual globe in Second Life. I fired off an email to him wondering if he'd ever followed up on that idea. Sure enough, he writes that late last year he and his game-developer wife (SL name) Zora Spoonhammer created " Sculpty Earth " which was then extensively reviewed by Wagner James Au in New World Notes . YouTube excerpt: A clever piece of hacking projects a movie of recent global cloud map images onto a transparent array floating above the Earth, letting you follow cloud patterns. Very Caspar David Friedrich of me, no? But that wasn't the end of the project. In the last few months the duo have created two more Earths , both works in progress. Below one of them you'll find a Google Maps application projected onto a plane that lets you load KML files, and which is controlled by nearby buttons. I managed to load some of my own KML content, and navigate around, albeit clumsily. And while you also can't click on the map to navigate or interact with the KML, the important point to take home from this proof of concept is that visitors are engaging in social cartography — anything that my avatar pulls up, your avatar can see too in real time. SL developers Daden Limited used similar technology in their Second Life Google Maps, blogged here a few months ago. The map also lets you g ...
