The first of six issues spinning off from the new Fox series, Fringe #1 (Wildstorm, $2.99) feels too much like a place for the show’s writers to dump their back-story notes. Two stories here — one about the past of Walter Bishop; the other a seemingly stand-along “fringe science” case — don’t feature either of the show’s lead characters. The credit market crisis is starting to put the brakes on car sales as more potential buyers are rejected for loans or receive loan terms they can’t afford. “Most of my time during the day is occupied (with) trying to get people financing,” said Tim Horgan, general manager of Champion Lincoln Mercury Mazda of Brockton. “I’ve never seen it really as tight.” Banks will no longer let car buyers roll over negative equity from a trade-in to a new loan, said Andrew Dale, owner of New England Motor Cars in Plymouth. For example, if a customer owed $12,000 on a trade-in whose book value had declined to $10,000, a bank would add the $2,000 onto the loan for the car they were buying. “They’re definitely getting more cautious with that,” Dale said. Lenders are reviewing car buyers’ credit histories more closely, and requiring down payments as high as 50 percent for those with poor credit scores, said Rick Gravina, owner of Pilgrim Auto Sales in Kingston. Those with good credit histories can still obtain loans for up to 95 percent of the car’s value, Gravina said. But minimum monthly income requirements have risen, and banks are requiring proof of income, Gravina said. Gravina said tighter lending requirements have contributed to a 15 percent decline in sales at his dealership this year.
