“Youth is a wonderful thing,” George Bernard Shaw once said. “What a crime to waste it on children.” Humor aside, recent research suggests that youthful energy may not be “wasted” after all. Through social interactions alone, the young can pass some of their vigor on to the elderly, improving the older generation’s cognitive abilities and vascular health and even increasing their Life span. Although researchers have documented these benefits in mammals, such as rats, guinea pigs and nonhuman primates, the reason for the effect has remained unclear. Now biologist Chun-Fang Wu of the University of Iowa offers a genetic explanation in the May 27 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Wu and graduate student Hongyu Ruan found that the presence of youthful, active fruit flies doubled the Life span of a group of flies with a mutation in Sod1, a gene that has been linked in humans to Alzheimer’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a motor-neuron disorder also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. She was living at the Newstead Farm in Upperville, Va. when she died. Image: Carol T. Powers for The New York Times. The bright chestnut filly named Genuine Risk thrilled me when she won the Kentucky Derby in 1980 with commanding style. Not only did she win, but she ran the last quarter mile of the race faster than any other horse ever had, except the amazing Secretariat, who went on to win the Triple Crown of American horseracing in 1973. This morning, Genuine Risk, who was the oldest living Kentucky Derby winner, died at the ripe old age of 31. [Video of Genuine Risk's Kentucky Derby victory is below the fold; 2:45]. Okay, as promised, here is my weekly Open Thread where I celebrate you, my readers, by chatting about anything that's on your minds. For example, is there a current event that you wish would receive more news coverage? Is there a particular feature you'd like this blog to have? Have you read a book or watched a movie you want to recommend to us? Do you have a question that you wish to ask? Did you recently do something that, as a kid, you swore you'd never do? Did you just meet the love of your Life? Did you go jogging at midnight with your underwear on your head? Are you a lurker who has never commented on a blog before? If so, I am especially interested to read what you have to say. Basically, I am interested to read anything that you'd like to share. Well, mostly anything. Buckingham Palace Gate with coat of arms, London, May 2005. Image: Dickbauch (Wikipedia). I am a panelist at a one day conference being held in London, England. This conference focuses on the value of blogs to the public, to science and to scientists, and is being held at the Royal Institution of Great Britain on 30 August 2008. My fellow panelists are Jennifer Rohn, editor at LabLit.com and Anna Kushnir, who works for Nature Network Boston and writes the blog, Lab Life . The panel moderator is my friend and ScienceBlogs colleague who lives in London, Mo . I need your help as I work on my contribution to this meeting, so I am asking you a series of questions I'd like you to respond to. The next questions in this series are; Have you experienced resistance to science blogging within the Scientific community? Why? What are scientists' perceptions of science blogging? It will end up being all white by the time it is eight years old. Image: Horse Wallpaper [ larger view ]. Even though I have always been a fan of black horses, my heart did leap at the sight of the noble Shadowfax racing towards Gandalf in response to his call in the Lord of the Rings . White horses have symbolized purity throughout most ages and cultures, so political leaders have often been portrayed astride a white horse. Interestingly, these so-called white horses are actually Gray. White horses have pink skin and blue eyes. Gray horses are typically born black, bay or chestnut in color but rapidly lose all hair pigmentation as they age, ending up completely white by the time they are eight years old. Meanwhile, their skin remains black and their eyes are typically dark, giving a silvery or grey cast to their seeming snowy-whiteness. This popular coat color results from an autosomal dominant mutation to a gene that was just identified by a research team at Uppsala University in Sweden. Unfortunately, this coat color is also linked to an increased risk of developing a specific form of cancer: melanoma. Thus, this finding has important implications for human medical research. Rea ...
