Last week, I got a look at “ The Sims 3 ” for the first time. To be honest, I hadn’t played “The Sims” since the release of the “Hot Date” expansion pack for “The Sims 2″; it was then I had the sudden realization that I should go outside to find real “hot dates.” (This is coming from the person who would later become a regular “World of Warcraft” player, so you can guess how the “hot date” prospect turned out.) Anyway, during a demo at a PR office in New York City, associate producer Lyndsay Pearson , ran down a few saucy, new details about the game that makes staying inside seem worthwhile: A simpler, user interface – The user interface for “The Sims 3″ looks more complex than that of previous games in the series. Its main screen includes more tabs and meters that go into more detail on a particular Sim’s relationships, personality traits and moods. However, Pearson told me the team was actually trying to make the interface “more approachable.” She said the game’s tutorials are designed to ease players — both longtime and new — into the gameplay. “People that are a little daunted by the game, we really want them to understand it’s about how you want to play,” she said. “And we’ll teach you the basics, but then if you don’t want to pay attention to [certain aspects], you don’t have to. If you just want to play this part, that’s cool. It’s totally up to you.” Pearson also said not to worry: The game also has the hardcore “Sims” player ...

Safety. Security. Science. These are the words that come the most often from officials at the Cummings School for Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University when they talk about the Level 3 Regional Biosafety Laboratory now under construction on their Grafton campus. The $31 million facility, one of 13 in a national network, is designed for the study of infectious diseases. Tufts was awarded $15 million by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to build the facility, which will contain both Level 2 and Level 3 laboratories. The Level 3 designation allows researchers to study infectious agents that may cause serious or potentially lethal diseases through inhalation. "You might be wondering why we need this here, at a veterinary school, rather than a medical school," said Dean Deborah Kochevar, DVM, PhD. "In the last 20 years, if you look at the infectious diseases that have emerged, most of them are zoonotic - they have crossed over into humans from animals." Among those zoonotic infections are SARS, mad cow disease, Lyme disease, and tularemia - a disease which Tufts researcher Sam Telford has been studying in a Level 3 laboratory that already exists on campus. Grafton, Westborough and Shrewsbury residents - the facility is barely half a mile from the towns' borders - at first expressed fears that infectious organisms would somehow escape the laboratory. They worried diseases would be stockpiled, that terrorists might target the Lab ...

Addressing a shortage of skilled clinical laboratory scientists (also referred to as medical technologists) in the state of Arizona, DeVry University began teaching classes for a new bachelor's degree program in Clinical Laboratory Science at its Phoenix campus in September. DeVry University's Clinical Laboratory Science program is one of only two bachelor's degree programs of its kind offered in Arizona. Until now, Arizona State University has been the only school to offer a CLS program in the state after the University of Arizona closed its program in 2004. ...

Untangled samples make for mellow delights Ironically, it probably would’ve been too expensive for legendary jazz imprint Blue Note to license the hip-hop tracks that sampled from its catalog. Still, for 13-song collection Droppin’ Science , it would have been nice, instructive and musicological to have the label’s late-’60s/early-’70s jazz-funk mellowness adjacent to the equally vintage hip-hop it mutated into via De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and others. Collected alone, one understands liner note writer ?uestlove’s classification of these un-samples as “the side of my pop’s record collection that I used to avoid like the plague,” especially given the music’s turbulent period of origin. Indeed, the proto-disco R&B (Ronnie Foster’s “Think Twice”) and flute-aided balladry (David McCallum's “The Edge”) are rather smooth. But this music did the trick and found Blue Note a new audience—or at least a generation of listeners open-eared enough to literally make it their own. ...

Last week, my daughter had her seventh birthday party, and it makes my heart swell to tell you that she wanted to have it at my Lab this year. So what to do? What to do? With 15 or so six/seven year olds in a full on laboratory settng. Well, thankfully, this is where ScienceBlogs rocks, since I had happened upon an awesome post by Janet over at Adventures in Science and Ethics that was all about the simple act of "just adding water" to see what happens. The only difference here, of course, is that we got to do it at a real Lab, so it was wonderful to see the kids get a real hearty dose of Science culture as it were.
