Madison - Mick Byrne has been hired to coach the University of Wisconsin men's cross country team. Byrne comes to the Badgers from Iona, where was the head men's and women's cross country coach since 1990. He will also serve as an assistant track and field coach under Ed Nuttycombe. Byrne replaces Jerry Schumacher, who left UW after 10 seasons to coach for Nike. During Schmacher's tenure, UW finished among the top six at the NCAA meet every year, capturing the 2005 championship. The Badgers also won nine straight Big Ten championships under Schumacher. Byrne comes with impressive credentials.  He led Iona to 17 consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference titles. His teams finished in the top 10 at the national meet for the past six seasons, including a second-place finish last year. Four times during that stretch, the Gaels finished in the top five.   "We are very pleased to have someone with Mick's coaching experience and status in the collegiate distance running world," Nuttycombe said in a statement. "He brings many years of knowledge and skill to our program and I have the utmost confidence that he will continue to help bring success to the Badger track and cross country programs." ...
