A veteran Canton City Schools administrator under investigation for criminal allegations was arrested Thursday night in northern Summit County, where police say he was intoxicated and threatening suicide. Peninsula police seized a .380-caliber, semi-automatic pistol from a car before charging 56-year-old James A. Irvin with inducing panic, using a weapon while intoxicated and improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle, said Sgt. Daniel Renz of the Peninsula Police Department. Earlier in the day, Stark County Sheriff investigators and Schools officials confirmed the Canton City Schools’ director of pupil services was part of an ongoing criminal investigation, details of which have not been made public. It’s not clear why Irvin — listed in school records as a North Canton resident — was in northern Summit County Thursday night. NO ONE HURT Peninsula police credited two people — a Canton teen and a pastor — for helping avoid a more serious situation as Irvin was “very intoxicated.” According to Renz, a series of cell phone calls ended with Irvin, the young man and the pastor meeting at a Cuyahoga Valley National Park parking lot. The young man and the pastor got into Irvin’s car, with the young man at the wheel. After driving around and talking for several hours, they were able to talk Irvin into stopping at a Peninsula cafe for a drink, leaving the gun inside the car, Renz said.
