Sacramento's McClatchy High School held a mock election today at the steps of the State Capitol. "Are you ready to vote in 32 days?" Superintendent of Public Education Jack O'Connell asked the assembled students. "Not really," would have been most of the students' responses considering only 20-40 of the 360 students persent were 18 years old. Early involvement in elections was clearly the goal, and vigorous debates were held preceding the vote. "Excercise your mouth; exercise your brain; make sure your voice is heard," O'Connell added. With neither a Diebolt machine nor hanging chad to be seen, students prefered Senator Barack Obama over Senator John McCain to be our next President by a wide 283-59-(33) margin. Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo also won mock re-election in her race against former NBA star and charter School founder Kevin Johnson by a 185-151-(5) margin. Students favored Prop 1A (high speed rail) (208-147) and Prop 7 (renewable energy) (261-84), while Prop 4 (parential notification for abortions) (83-283) and Prop 8 (marriage equality ban) (85-274) were overwhelmingly rejected. Prop 11 (redistricting) was close, with 160 opposed and 151 in favor. There's more... Image courtesy McClatchy High School. ...
