These comprise three sets of standards: food-based, nutrient-based and standards covering food other than lunch. They reflect the Governments concern about poor Nutrition and rising trends of obesity among the School-age population and the effect of these on ong- as well as short-term health, including increased risks of diabetes, coronary heart disease and cancers. The standards set minimum requirements for healthier foods and restrict less healthy items served at lunchtimes and other meals and snacks at School, including from vending machines or tuck shops. The standards set specific requirements for nutrients and the frequency, and in some cases the quantity, on which they should be provided. They cover fruit and vegetables (not less than two portions per pupil per day), drinks, deep-fried foods and micronutrients. There are requirements for calcium, as evidence shows that many School-age children and adolescents do not consume adequate amounts for bone health. The standards recommend that a variety of dairy foods, low-fat where possible, should be provided, including milk, cheese, yoghurt, fromage frais and custard. Spot urine samples were collected for UIC analysis using a modified Sandell-Kolthoff method.Results:The median UIC of the children (n=857) was 125 mug/l (range 11-757 mug/l). The proportion of children with a UIC <100 mug/l was 30.0% and the proportion of children with a UIC <50 and >300 mug/l was 5.5 and 3.0%, respectively.Conclusions:The iodine nutritional status of the Swedish population is adequate. I get hungry just thinking of all the programs that the city's new food services director, Tony Geraci, has in store for Baltimore's students. Some of his ideas seem so commonsensical that it's a wonder the city schools haven't tried them before. Kids coming to School on an empty stomach? Give them breakfasts in their classrooms . (OK, that one was tried at a few of Baltimore's schools in the 1990s, but the program didn't go anywhere amid concerns about cleanliness.) Kids don't like the School lunch?
