A Utica mother’s anger at cafeteria aides for taking her children’s lunches away from them over unpaid meal charges has prompted the city’s Board of Education to review the district’s policies. Sara Donlon was infuriated to learn that her children did not receive replacement meals during the lunchtime incident this past week at Donovan Middle School. “All over $4,” Donlon said. “I’m flabbergasted as to how this School is allowed to do this to a child.” She said that her daughter Isabella, 11, and her son, Jebadia, 13, received trays with food in the lunch line, got to the cash register and at that point had their lunches taken away by cafeteria aides. “They took it from my daughter and threw it in the garbage,” she said. Her son, not knowing of the unpaid meal charges, paid for extra French fries but had those taken away from him because some of the money was applied to the unpaid charges, she said. He was allowed to keep his pizza, which he shared with another child who was hungry. “My son paid for his lunch and they took it,” she said. “I don’t understand how anybody can do this to a child.” Donlon said she never received a letter or a bill in the mail telling her of the unpaid meal charges. The district is working to generate ideas on addressing such situations, Superintendent Marilyn Skermont said. Here’s a good one: What do you do when a teacher stops you to discuss your child and proceeds to do so in front of other moms, other Kids and your child? An instructor in an after-School recreation class actually announced that Samantha was “NONCOMMUNICATIVE” as soon as I walked in to pick her up. “Samantha wouldn’t say one word to me, she didn’t do the project, and I don’t have time to sit with just one student.” The teacher proceeded to tell me that all her other students did the project—in fact it was EASY—however, tasks will be more difficult in future weeks. I could still get my money back if I wanted to drop the class. Hmm—I wasn’t quite sure how to react at the moment, being that my 5-year-old was standing right beside me, but I knew if I stayed another minute it could have gotten ugly. The thing is, Samantha doesn’t want to drop the class. I’m guessing she just wanted a teacher who was a little more nurturing and a little less frightening. She has friends in the class and she shouldn’t have to become a dropout because the instructor doesn’t want to deal with her. The class is for kindergartners, and surely, Samantha can’t be the first slow-to-warm-up child to walk through the door. Samantha is doing great in kindergarten and her teacher says she’s opening up and sharing with the class. But the after-School educator rattled my girl and now the “froggy in her throat” has reappeared. I suppose I could have just let it go and gon ...
