Firefighters from four companies responded to the blaze, which began about 5:30 p.m., Lugoff Fire Chief Robert Polksaid Sunday. The cause of the Fire is unknown, he said. “The damage inside the room is so significant it will take some time to investigate,” Polk said. The Fire was contained to the one room, which housed technology equipment, but smoke poured through wing 500 and into the cafeteria and kitchen, he said. While the smoke was cleared Sunday evening, the Kershaw County School superintendent determined that air quality inside the School prevented reopening after the three-day Labor Day weekend. ... Kershaw County School officials are scrambling to replace more than 1,300 wireless laptop computers damaged in a Fire Monday at Lugoff-Elgin High. The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Department and State Law Enforcement Division officials are investigating the cause of the Fire, which occurred in a storage room. Classes resume today for the School’s 1,500 students, though the affected wing will be closed for cleaning for at least a week. Total damage, including the computer losses, still was being calculated late Tuesday, district spokeswoman Mary Anne Byrd said. Figures won’t be available for at least a couple of days. The Hewlett-Packard laptops were assigned to the School’s 10th-, 11th- and 12-graders as part of an ongoing initiative to outfit all high schoolers with laptop computers. ...

No parking, Fire lane. Visitors to the Honesdale High School will notice new signs in place and corresponding, yellow pavement paint, alerting drivers where not to park. It’s a safety issue, says Superintendent Tom Jenkins. “[The Fire department and ambulance service] have been concerned about the places where people park, making the roads around the buildings (Honesdale High School and Wayne Highlands Middle School) too narrow, if they had to respond with a Fire engine or an ambulance ... any kind of emergency vehicle,” he said. Superintendent Jenkins said they’re looking to get the word out, before ticketing begins. Violators will be charged $25. The Honesdale Borough Police Department will be enforcing the parking problem on routine patrols. Superintendent Jenkins said, “The issue has really gone on for several years. It primarily is a problem when we have events at the high School or middle School, either athletic events, concerts, graduation ... when there’s a large number of people that come here ...Stan Pratt, the Honesdale Fire Chief, contacted me during last School year ...and he sent me a plan that specifically addresses the area going into the high School from Terrace Street, and around the high School circle.
