Brooke Edwards is a typical college student. The freshman has four classes a week, a lot of homework and midterms. But she also practices three hours a day with her field hockey teammates and attends other team-related functions throughout the week. “In the beginning, I was so stressed,” Edwards said. “I’d go to Class and I got the syllabus, and I’d feel like I had so much work to do. It was hard to find time to do all of it.” Sophomore Meredith Hurst said the time constraints can become overwhelming. “It’s actually a lot right now,” said Hurst, who is taking 12 credit hours this quarter. “Three classes isn’t bad, but when you have everything else, it gets to be a lot. But it keeps me on track.” On some days, the players start their day much like any other student. They get up at 8 a.m., or whenever their first Class is, and stay out until practice ends at 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, however, players start their day at 7:30 a.m. with a weightlifting session. The players are also expected to meet with a coach once a week for individual drills. “Sometimes, I’ll get up earlier and study,” said Edwards. “It’s hard to get in a lot of study time with practices, games and everything.” Hurst added that she felt balancing her schedule has been a little easier in her second year as a student-athlete. “Time management is such a big thing,” she said. “Being in season, it’s more disciplined because you know what you have going and not muc ...

FRANKFORT . Call it love at first flight. On a clear October day last year, high School student Cameron Russell flew with his mom and a pilot instructor over the city of Frankfort in a Sky Hawk 172 Cessna. While it was about 70 degrees on the ground, flying above felt like a balmy 58 degrees. As he flew over Frankfort and could see Louisville from a distance, he saw how aviation science .wind speed, drag, and gravitational pull . was more than talk in the classroom. "That was the first time I realized how interesting it was," Russell, 17, said of aviation after signing up for an aviation Class just to fill his second period. "The Class really didn't help at all because it was real boring. But when we went up to fly, I thought, 'this Class is going to be worth it.'" As a second-year student, Russell is working on obtaining his private pilot's license. ...

The Zeeland East High School wetlands area was quiet on a cold, Tuesday morning as the sun broke through the thick clouds. The only action was a few ducks gliding down the winding waterway surrounded by trees and other vegetation. Moments later, though, the serene landscape was transformed into an interactive, outdoor classroom. Nearly 30 upperclassmen in hooded sweatshirts and coats invaded the network of trails at the wetlands, looking for the best spot to begin their experiment. Impact of the Wetlands Ecology Class Zeeland West High School teacher Jennifer Soukhome said students come away from her Wetlands Ecology Class with a better understanding of what they can do in the world. “It’s the first time I realized I really had an impact on a kid’s belief system,” she said. “They are really more self-aware of their environment. ... Once they know what’s out there, they tend to take better care of it.” Some pairs skimmed around the outside, while others went right among the plants, many of which were taller than the students themselves. They used two long rulers connected by string on the top and bottom to form a square around a section of vegetation. Then they wrote down what they observed within that area. Students said the experience was like most days in the wetland ecology Class at Zeeland West High School — interesting. “I love wetlands,” senior Jenna VanRhee said as she worked on the experiment. “Field trips are fun and you ...
