The coming of ‘Old Man Winter’ may bring welcome relief for Norton School bus operators as early as mid-December said representatives from the Massachusetts Highway Department. Gerald Bernard, assistant district construction engineer on the Route 123 paving project in Norton, said in a phone interview, that his crews will break for winter as soon as the temperature drops too low for asphalt seals to form over the day’s construction. Bernard anticipates the work clearing the storm drains on Route 123 will most likely end in mid-December and resume in late March or early April. Joseph C. Solmonese Elementary Principal Mary Brown told the School committee Monday that the change to Daylight Savings Time coupled with the construction on Route 123 has her students leaving School in the dark many afternoons. Brown said a parent told her it took them 25 minutes to pass through town, with the construction delays on Route 123. Since the changing of bus schedules in September of 2004, placing the JCS School as the last of five School routes, JCS parents often expressed dissatisfaction with the change, which brings many students home in the dark during the winter months. Previous to the change, the L.G. Nourse Elementary School was the last route for the schools.
