Two University of California, Los Angeles student athletes have been selected as Rhodes Scholars for 2009. Scott Hugo, a starter on the university's rugby team, will pursue a masters degree in international relations at the University of Oxford in England, UCLA spokesman Marc Dellins said. Chris Joseph, a starter on the school's football team from 2005 to 2007, will do graduate work in geography. The Santa Barbara resident, who majored in geography with a focus on the causes of deforestation, graduated in June. They were among 32 men and women across the United States who won the scholarships, the oldest of the international study awards available to American students. Rhodes Scholarships were created in 1902 by the will of British philanthropist Cecil Rhodes. Winners are selected on the basis of high academic achievement, personal integrity, leadership potential and physical vigor, among other attributes. The American students will join an international group of Scholars selected from 13 other jurisdictions around the world. Approximately 80 Scholars are selected each year. The value of the Rhodes Scholarship varies depending on the field of study. The total value averages about $50,000 per year. ...

When Chase Palisch learned that he was one of 32 men and women from across the United States who have been selected as Rhodes Scholars for 2009, his first reaction was, "Are you serious?" Then the senior at Centre College said he thought he just might faint. This weekend was a whirlwind for Palisch, 22, a Calvert City native majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology. Leading up to the announcement that he had won one of the world's most prestigious scholarships, there were interviews with the selection committee, a cocktail party with other candidates and judges, and a lot of waiting.
