The debate in Florida about a proposed gay-marriage ban -- Amendment 2 -- elicited this video from Michael Schiavo. His wife, Terry, was in a persistent vegetative state and was dependent on a feeding tube. Schiavo fought for years to have her tube removed. He succeeded after a seven-year court battle, and his wife died in 2005. In the video, he says "the same people who thought they knew what was best for my wife, Terry, are once again trying to tell others how to live.'' Gay rights advocates fighting Proposition 8 in California have in their corner Fallout Boy, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the conservative Orange County Register , Google, the California Episcopal Church, and a handful of other notables; but who's donating face time on behalf of the anti-Amendment 2 crew in Florida? As of yesterday, Michael Schiavo. Remember him? He's the guy who wanted to remove his brain-dead wife's feeding tube, but—thanks in part to a network of moralizing meddlers—couldn't (then could, then couldn't, then did). Schiavo's an interesting choice for Progress Florida, which has been the most vocal opponent of Amendment 2. He's more qualified than any celebrity to speak on the repercussions of government infringement in private matters, but I think he gives a lot of Floridians the willies. By the end of the Terri Schiavo case, most Floridians had at best a luke-warm attitude toward him even if they strongly agreed with his right to do what he did. Conservative "murder" rhetoric and 24-hour media coverage pushed a lot of moderates out of the debate, while stirring up the worst in civil libertarians and religious fundamentalists alike. I wonder if Yes2Marriage, the Christian group behind the proposition, is going to air any anti-Schiavo ads to rejuevenate its campaign? Amendment 2 is a stupid, poorly written, unneeded piece of garbage that may have serious implications for all Floridians, but at it's heart the battle over the amendment is a gay issue. Issues of this sort tend to be controversial. So maybe you can't blame Florida Red & Blue , the main organization opposing the amendment, for zeroing in on the side effects the amendment may have, mainly dissolution of domestic partnership laws that could effect seniors and straight couples. But now a different organization, Progress Florida , has really muddied the waters. They have a new web ad starring Michael Schiavo -- that's right, husband of Terri Schiavo. The Terri Schiavo case remains a point of contention for many social conservatives and right to lifers, and inserting it into this unrelated matter ensures nastiness. I'm not trying to blast Progress Florida or Michael Schiavo, but with polls so close on the matter, I just don't understand why they would go off on such a controversial tangent like this that isn't likely to change many minds. After a lot of political and medical hoopla in the early months of 2005, Terri Schiavo, died on March 31, at the age of 41. She was institutionalized for the final 15 years of her life after suffering cardiac arrest in 1990. Her CT scans showed severe atrophy of the brain. Electroencephalograms, tests of the electrical activity of the brain, showed nothing but flat lines. An autopsy confirmed that she had been in a persistent vegetative state without awareness or any hope of improvement. The very public death of Terri Schiavo began a rush on requests for the paperwork needed to order a good death with dignity. People lit up the phone lines of places like Aging with Dignity , asking for information on living wills. At about that time, a team of researchers from UC San Francisco and the San Francisco VA Medical Center were interviewing 117 people about their end-of-life wishes and their feelings about advance directives, the legal documents which spell out people's desires. Turns out, they weren't so interested in the laws and specifics of advance directives, but they were eager to talk about Terri Schiavo. "Around the time the Schiavo story peaked, we were making follow-up calls to the subjects in our advance directives study," Dr. Rebecca Sudore, geriatrics research at the VA center and lead author of the story said in a news release . "Participants had little interest in discussing our study. They just wanted to talk about Terri ...
