A group of dedicated volunteers has made nearly 4,000 cooling Scarves for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Scarves, a simple, yet highly effective body cooling product that works on the principle of evaporation, were put together during work sessions from July 7 to Nov. 3 in Friendship Hall of Mount Zion Lutheran Church. Project coordinator Gail Smith said she was flabbergasted by the turnout. “After the first time we announced it, I expected 15 people. There were 44,” she said. “People can’t do enough. This is absolutely amazing.” Project sponsors The project was sponsored by Washington County Chapter 30986 Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and supported by Washington County Lutheran churches. Smith, president of the chapter and a member of Mount Zion, said she was overwhelmed by the assistance from other area churches and residents as well as the donations that were received for the project. An average of 35 people attended each work session. The $3,667 in donations was matched by Thrivent. Material and thread were purchased from Marian’s Fabric, Greencastle, and JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts, Hagerstown. The cooling material, Soil Moist, was bought at Snavely’s Garden Corner Inc. of Hagerstown. “They all gave us wonderful discounts,” Smith said. Shipping was provided free by the Air National Guard of Hagerstown. Most of the Scarves have already been sent to the soldiers, according to Smith. “We got a thank you letter that the sc ...
