[This article was also posted on Global Nerdy.] Pictured below is the death spasm of a recording format: the compact cassette (a.k.a. “cassette tape”), sitting on the bargain shelf at a drugstore somewhere in the U.S., its price reduced so that it’s one of the cheapest items in the store. Even gum is probably more expensive: Photo [...] ... Source: www.salon.com --- 20 hours ago
Superdelegates helped make Barack Obama the Democratic nominee for president, but if he has his way, they won't be nearly as influential next time around. Obama's campaign announced Wednesday that it'll be asking delegates to the Democratic convention next week to approve a "Democratic Change Commission" that would look into changing the primary schedule, reducing the number of superdelegates and changing the way caucus states award delegates. The ideas grew out of discussions with Hillary Clinton's aides, David Plouffe told the Washington Post's Dan Balz . "The number of super delegates has gotten too large in relation to overall delegates," Plouffe told Balz. "We want to give more control back to the voters ... Everyone thinks there ought to be more weight given to the results of the elections." (That sound you heard was Bill Clinton -- who called superdelegates all spring to keep them from endorsing Obama -- yelling, "Now you say so.") Most primaries and caucuses would be held in March, which would mean this year's complicated Super Tuesday was a one-shot deal. A handful of early states (presumably including Iowa, which launched Obama toward the nomination) would still get to go first. No word on how the Democrats plan to guarantee seats at the 2012 convention for all the various power brokers and elected officials who made up the ranks of the superdelegates this year. But given how many of them hoped to avoid making a decisio ...

Alaska Airlines consistently has won industry awards for its Mileage Plan frequent flier program including this year's InsideFlyer magazine's "Program of the Year." Those honors, no doubt, were achieved in part by the program's generosity: a free domestic trip on Alaska or its sister airline, Horizon Air, for 20,000 miles. The industry standard is 25,000. But in a year when fuel prices have escalated 51 percent for the airline, generosity has become too expensive. The 20,000-mile free trip is going away Nov. 1. "When Alaska airlines introduced its popular 20,000-mile 'Saver' award 13 years ago, we were paying less than $20 a barrel for crude oil. Last week oil touched $1.45 a barrel," said Steve Jarvis, Alaska's vice-president of marketing. In its place will be a new thre-tiered array of awards: The previous "Saver" award has been renamed "Super Saver." The trips available on Super Saver, even at 25,000 miles, will be limited. A new middle award level will be called "Choice." Choice awards will cost more in miles than Super Saver but will offer more seats. These seats will be available for 40,000 miles for domestic trips. The former "Peak" awards will become "Full Flex." Those awards will have no restrictions. Miles cost: 55,000 Additional changes to the program include a $25 fee for booking trips on an Alaska partner airline. The airlines are throwing some fliers a bone in this switch. Awards for flying within a state, formerly ...

By Aggrey Sam While I’m not sad to be back in the N.O. (driving around Orlando isn’t what I consider fun; the airport is even worse), I must say the AAU Boys Basketball Super Showcase (and what I saw of Nationals) is some of the best ball I’ve seen all summer. Whether that’s a testament to me not being on the East Coast, the overall level of talent being down or a higher quality of ball in Orlando, I don’t know–but I was thoroughly entertained (mostly) by the event(s) and got to see a lot of players I’d either not seen in a while or only heard about. What stuck out to me the most was the team dynamic; as much as people talk about the individual aspect of AAU (I probably don’t help by writing about individual players, but it’s not like casual readers want to hear about the summer success of the Gauchos, DC Assault, Team Breakdown, etc.), winning games attracts college coaches. I’ve seen multiple kids get looks from schools based on their team’s success, whereas more talented players (not the superstars, come on now) might get overlooked because their team loses early in the tourney. While powerhouse squads like Team Final, BABC, New York Gauchos, All Ohio Red (16-and-under champs) and 17-and-under Super Showcase Gold Division champs Athletes First held it down (and got plenty of love from coaches), I have to give a shout out to teams like Birmingham Ice and Illinois Warriors, who overcame a (supposed) lack of talent to make major noise ...

The Ron Paul Revolution, such as it is, has moved to Hair Balls. We took note that Paul, Brazoria County's fightin' gynecologist, was writing an autobiography. According to the LA Times, the Clippers made a deal with Jason Williams (for the vet minimum, we assume) only after they were unable to come to terms with Shaun Livingston. The exact sequence is unclear, but one assumes that discussions with Livingston began after Brevin Knight was traded for Jason Hart, which ate up a healthy nugget of the Clips' remaining capspace. (I'm not the expert on these things.) We can assume that Hart was meant to be the solid backup PG, with Mike Taylor available to fill the 3rd string spot, but the primary backup spot was there for Livingston, as well as some minutes at the two or three. But in the Clippers snowballing (and completely unprecedented) free agent bonanza, some of the potential utility minutes must have disappeared, going to Ricky Davis and Eric Gordon. Even so, it appears at this point that the Clips were willing to continue their investment in Livingston and were offering him a minimum contract, but he and the team were "unable to come to terms." So this is a bit of headscratcher, and a muffled finish to what was once an extremely promising Clipper career. Was it about money or opportunity for Livingston? Things never went his way, and he's had some horrible breaks. The team apparently held a spot for him and was willing to see if he could some day return and fulfill at least some of his potential. But they were also in the process of putting the roster through a major overhaul, ... Source: www.sparkplugging.com --- 28 days ago
