Seoul Metropolitan Government will sponsor England Premier League football team Manchester United to promote tourism, the city said Friday. The 1.3 million pound (2.7 billion won) contract will be effective by next May, enabling 330 million football fans around the world to see 10-15 seconds of the ''Visit Korea, Discover Seoul'' slogan and ''Hi Seoul, Soul of Asia'' logo on digital signboards at the teams home ground, Old Trafford. The advertisements will be shown between six and eight times per match. ''The deal is expected to produce a 31.6 billion won marketing effect and boost publicity'' a city spokesman said. Korean Park Ji-sung plays for the British soccer club. The first advertisement was aired on Sept. 23 during the team's match with Middlesbrough. Let's first make a little list of them: Incufiber : KPN is steadily , if not stealthily , rolling out through its Glashart ('heart of glass') joint venture with privately owned Reggefiber. New towns are coming on board on a near daily basis. Telefonica (TEF) is launching its network October 1. Swisscom (SCMWY.PK) is getting serious too. Makedonski Telekom [owned by Deutsche Telekom (DT)] is rolling out in Skopje. SureWest (SURW), [USA] is progressing too. Munifiber , utility fiber, etc.: Greece and Mauritius launched a big plan, whereas Australia (primarily targeting FTTC) and New Zealand are still stuck in the debating phase. Saudi Arabia is building a new city for 2-milion people, with FTTH from Ericsson (ERIC). In the US, progress was made in several towns. Localised initiatives are found in Ireland and Australia too. Altnetfiber : Smart Comp is building in Brno. Over in Korea, Hanaro Telecom is getting its act together . Cable . There are several initiatives worldwide, most recently in Hawaii via Time Warner Cable (TWC), Japan (Suo Cable) and the US (Corn Belt Communications). Open access .
