Psychologist Mahzarin R. Banaji, in the Chronicle Review , takes issue with The New Yorker ’s recent cover depicting Barack Obama in Muslim garb fist-pumping his wife Michelle who is dressed as a terrorist. The flag burns in the fireplace of the Oval Office while a portrait of Osama bin Laden looks on. Banaji says the cover’s intended Satire is a failure on the part of the magazine’s editors to recognize what actually happens in the human brain when it interact with such images. From the Chronicle Review : If he [cartoonist Barry Blitt] were cognizant of the facts about how the mind works, the simple associations that typify the brain’s ordinary connection-making, he might have thought differently before he sketched the first flame in that fireplace. If he had paid attention to a few of the dozens of experiments available — even in the popular media — that describe how the mind learns and believes, he and his boss wouldn’t have responded as they did to the questions posed to them the day after the cover appeared. I am, as are most others in my social class, an emphatic defender of the arts as a primary vehicle to irritate, aggravate, and offend. I have been trained to step back and rethink my reaction to that which jolts and nauseates me. I know that, in such moments especially, I must look within for a possible inability to transcend ingrained values. For that reason, and because we who read The Chronicle are likely to be among the sta ...

So I have a chum who has created a MySpazz persona and begun blogging about rock music. They are a music writer (it's not our Associate Editor though), but have sworn me to keep their identity a secret. Whatever. I will keep their real name under wraps, but I really must direct you to their latest blog post "The Top 10 Most Overrated Albums of All Time" which was clearly penned with the goal of scoring as many outraged MySpace blog comments from coolsie kids as possible - and good lord, didn't they succeed! Amongst the list of "overrated" albums are Exile On Main Street, Nevermind, Blonde on Blonde, and Hendrix's Are You Experienced? (how's this for a gem - "Listen up, Jimi Hendrix, I've played Guitar Hero and I can tell you, YOU ARE HOLDING IT THE WRONG WAY AROUND. You are clearly not at all experienced, now are you?" ) Needless to say, the post has already scored 460+ comments (approximately 455 of them screaming "DIE" or an equivalent insult). Not only is the blog entry itself rather rib-tickling, but the comments have had me in stitches. Go check it out for yourself. Kudos (2 of 'em) to you, "Vonette Cherry". Can't wait to see what your next blog entry is about. ...

The recent New Yorker cover stirred up quite a bit of controversy and offended the masses . TheDemoMemo was amongst many who were not amused by the New Yorker caricature; BrainBasedBusiness discussed the dangers of using Satire to cloak violent messages; while ManagersRealm called the overall outraged response childish. ThePublishingSpot reminded readers of a very important Supreme Court decision affecting Satire writers and artists in general. This week Google revealed Knol , a new open-source Internet encyclopedia. According to WebMetricsGuru , Google's motivation for creating Knol could be dubious, and also quoted Wikipedia founder Jimmy Whales saying he didn't think Knol would generate much quality. BrandingPost is concerned about Google's increasing omnipresence and AdHurl is worried that Google is on an unstoppable path toward global domination. ManagersRealm is running an interesting series spotlighting Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen for being "two of the more savvy young businesswomen in the world today." In this series, author Gary Bourgeault, will take you from the Olsen twins' fist break, to their emergence as two of the youngest, most successful young business women of our time.
