Well, the terrestrial Radio companies failed to stop the XM-Sirius merger from a happening with a rather ridiculous campaign against the merger, but that doesn't mean they can't continue to try to cause problems. The latest is that they've convinced Representative Ed Markey to introduce legislation requiring all Satellite Radio devices to include the ability to play HD Radio (terrestrial Radio's attempt to provide a better quality product to compete with Satellite). The FCC had just begun investigating whether or not such an HD Radio mandate made sense, but apparently Markey can't wait and is pushing to have the mandate pushed through as law before the FCC can study the issue. Is it worth mentioning that the NAB, the lobbying arm of the terrestrial Radio stations (and the group that resorted to all sorts of questionable actions in trying to prevent the Sirius-XM merger), is one of Markey's biggest campaign contributors ? Oh, and that XM CEO Mel Karmazin contributed to Markey's campaign back in 2001 (when Karmazin worked for Viacom), but apparently hasn't contributed more recently ? Howard Stern stands to make hundreds of millions of dollars through his move to Sirius ( NSDQ: SIRI ) from CBS Radio but what has he lost? Millions of listeners—and with them, relevance and influence, contends the LA Times . The exploits and the FCC battles that made him famous and kept him in the news are in the past. LAT: "So far, the Radio personality's leap from traditional media to a niche platform has come at a heavy price—namely, cultural relevancy. Unlike an Arianna Huffington, who vastly increased her reach on her upstart website, Stern's place in the national conversation has been reduced to a murmur in the din of the exploding entertainment universe." Then again, Huffington's upstart site is free and Stern's audience is subscription . It's also loyal. The Sirius-XM ( NSDQ: XMSR ) Radio merger expands his potential audience to about 19 million but in a way that's reminiscent of cable networks available in 70 million homes with only a fraction of those ever tuning in. Analysts peg his audience no higher than 2 million but Sirius says those figures are low. Sirius subscribers get Stern on Satellite Radio and internet Radio as part of the full $12.95 package; as of last week, XM subscribers can add the show, which hasn't changed all that much by most accounts, for $4. What has changed? The LAT says the quality of Stern's guests: "With a reduced audience, Stern's show is no longer a prime stop on the major film promotion ci ...

Tyler Savery submits: It is hard to believe, but then again it isn’t. It appears that once again car sales are down. In most years, the entry of Fall means that there are car deals everywhere as dealerships try to sell off the remaining this year's models to make room for next year's. This year, the situation differed greatly. Auto makers have cut production, closed plants, and have inventory that simply does not warrant a huge sale. The customers that do come to shop are having an increasingly difficult time getting their financing, and thus many are simply opting to hold onto their existing wheels. For Satellite Radio watchers, the slumping car sales is simply another negative piece of news on the stock. Yes, the penetration rate of installations is increasing, but month after month sales continue to decline. Because the OEM channel is the subscriber driver for SDARS, there is a direct correlation between auto sales and the number of subscribers announced in any given quarter. Poor auto sales means fewer subscribers trying out the product. Complete Story » ...

Now that Sirius and XM have merged , there's a new crop of Satellite radios emerging. Here's one from Pioneer, the XMp3 that can act like a TiVo , snagging recordings of five of your favorite stations at the same time. That's so great it doesn't even seem legal. Also like a TiVo is the XMp3's 30-minute buffer, letting you pause and rewind live programming so you won't miss a single word of Howard Stern, available as of October 6th in the "Best of Sirius" package ($4/month ) for XM subscribers. Shipping today, the Radio's $279 price seems steep, but hey, it's not that bad considering less-capable Satellite hand-held radios such as the Sirius Stiletto 2 cost about the same. Now if there were a Sirius version that receives the best of XM, we'd be on board. Electronista , via Ubergizmo ...

With all the merger discussions, business concerns, and changes going on in the industry, sometimes we forget about what Satellite Radio is truly supposed to affect: Your Life . Deep down, the purpose of this medium isn't about just the wizbang techie gadgets or the programming contracts or the latest deals. It's about connecting to listeners and becoming integrated into our lives. For myself, Satellite Radio (obviously) is a huge part of my life - more than just being part of the blog - I literally cannot imagine my days without either XM or Sirius . My commute would be, well, utterly boring. So, I thought it would be neat to have a discussion as a weekend feature and share with each other: When did you get your first Satellite Radio? How many do you have, and where are they? Do you listen more via your computer or via the radios (or both equally)? And most importantly... how has Satellite Radio changed your life?
