I bet you think that I frequent libraries since I am a librarian. This would be a logical assumption, but a wrong one. Even though I live a mile from the gorgeous main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, I rarely go there. In the past, the only times I entered its hollowed halls was [...] ... Hi, I am writing a paper on a book I read for school and would greatly appreciate any help. The sentence in question-"Water for Elephants, by Sara Gruen, is the story of Jacob Jakowski, a college student who finds himself alone and running from his troubled life and as the veterinarian for the Benzini Brothers circus." just doesn't seem right to me and I was wondering if I need more commas or if there is a better way to word this. Also, can you help me understand when commas and semi colons should be used and when to get rid of the word 'and'? Thanks for your help! ... Source: www.celebritypro.com --- 50 days ago

A few weeks ago, one of my colleagues decided to form a bookclub. Always eager for an excuse to read, I signed up. Our first meeting, which was today, was to discuss our first book, which was one I’d suggested: Water for Elephants, by Sara Gruen. I’d already read it. I [...] ... Fans of Water for Elephants , the breakout bestseller by Sara Gruen , will be glad to know she has another book coming soon. This one also is for animal lovers -- it was inspired by Ms. Gruen's fascination with the bonobo ape. Emma Sweeney , the New York literary agent who sold Water for Elephants to Algonquin Books. Emma spoke earlier today to a Maggiano's NorthPark luncheon group organized by her aunt, publicist Julia Sweeney of Dallas. She also mentioned that the movie rights to Water for Elephants have been sold, though the project's still in pre-production. According to Emma, Ape House will be published by Spiegel & Grau in the spring of 2009. ... Source: bookstothesky.blogspot.com --- 31 days ago
Imagine the days when the Circus came into town with a big parade and everyone gathered to watch the elephants put up the big tent. This book really gives the reader the feel of the old-time circus. The good feelings -- kids having fun, popcorn, and the excitement of the performances....and the bad side....neglected or mistreated animals, roughnecks, thieves, and the challenges and danger of being a performer. Gruen's writing pulls you into the circus world and the life of the main character, Jacob Jankowski. Jacob joins the circus after having to leave college without completing his veterinary degree. He's put in charge of the circus menagerie and finds it challenging, especially one elephant named Rosie who just resists being trained to perform. Most of the time I find myself disappointed when I read a book that came out with as much hype as this one. But, I found myself pleasantly surprised. Let yourself escape to the Big Top -- read this book!! Gruen has also written another book about relationships with animals called "Riding Lessons and Flying Changes.'' ... Book Review by Zinta Aistars · Paperback: 350 pages · Publisher: Algonquin Books, 2007 · Price: $13.95 · ISBN-10: 1565125606 · ISBN-13: 978-1565125605 I’ve been to the circus only once in my life, as a small child, towed along by my parents for what they surely thought would be a treat. It wasn’t. We never went again. Even as a small child, I seemed to instinctively pick up on the abuse required to get wild animals to do what they do in the three rings of a circus. If nothing else, the sight of such wonderful creatures as elephants, lions, tigers, bears and various others, forced to do what they would not normally do but for cheap human entertainment, galled me. I loved animals. I loved them at a distance, to view them in either their natural habitat or through some telescopic lens that would keep the disruption of their lives in the wild at a minimum. For that reason, out of my respect for their wildness, I have avoided both the circus and zoos. Sara Gruen’s novel, Water for Elephants , reinforced my decision. It is the story of Jacob Jankowski, both at age 23 and at age 90-something (he can’t clearly recall, as he narrates the story in a series of flashbacks from the nursing home where he is at present wasting away his final days). He does not run away to the circus for the usual romantic reasons of seeking adventure and freedom, as it is commonly viewed. His parents have died in a car crash, and he finds himself without any inherita ... Source: lolayabonobo.wildlifedirect.org --- 50 days ago

Lots on the go right now… I’m presently away with the family and some friends, sitting “off the grid” at the edge of a lake, enjoying the long weekend. Upon my return I’ve got some work to do — I’m behind on some writing projects and have web development stacked up, including some server migration and WordPress update work. In the meantime, while blogging in abstentia, I’ve compiled a digital reading list for you while I on the other hand am hoping to have more time with some analogue reading material, including Frank Viola’s newest, Reimagining Church: Pursuing the Dream of Organic Christianity and Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants , which a friend loaned me with the assurance I’d like it, but I’ve not yet started, having gotten distracted by Clay Shirky . Oh, and about Rob Bell’s latest Nooma video, “She” — I don’t know anything. Nada. But don’t worry, everyone else is blogging about it. So on with the link fest! What do you know? Fictional character Jacob Jankowski, now in his 90’s and living in a nursing home, dazzles us with his tale of joining the circus during the Depression in “Water for Elephants”. He enchants us with his tales of working for the “greatest show on Earth”, which is in reality a show run by a money- and fame-hungry ringmaster who eats steak in the dining car while withholding his employee’s pay. We meet the freaks who are the bread and butter of the show, who beneath the clown makeup and overgrown beards, are people with hearts and stories of their own. We meet a kind-hearted whore and white horses and a Polish elephant named Rosie. After the sudden death of both his mother and father, aspiring Veterinarian Jacob Jankowski joins the circus and creates a dysfunctional family of his own. He falls in love with Marlena, the beautiful performer who is married to the circus’ schizophrenic animal trainer. He befriends the lovely Rosie, an elephant who understands Polish and who alone can cause shows to sell-out. One night there is a disturbance in the big top and Marlena’s abusive husband is murdered. Jacob must live with his knowledge of who committed the crime until his senior years, when he is living in a nursing home he hates. It is at this point that he chooses to reminiscence with us, and we learn the whole truth. This was a beautiful, haunting story, one that I’m so glad I had the chance to read. The third novel I’ve read for the Savvy Summer ... Source: lastpageturned.blogspot.com --- 39 days ago
Definitely one of the better books I have read. While Gruen moves us around in time, we always know exactly where we are in the story. This is a real gift. Often when reading other amateur reviews of other books, the confusion over back and forth time lines creeps up often. It simply never happens in this book. This book chronicles one man's love for a woman, for animals, and for the circus. His loving nature is a stark contrast for the cut-throat world of the old fashioned train circus, and the often brutal men who lived and worked it. ...
