You know how solid state drives aren't very common right now? SanDisk laid the blame for that directly onto Microsoft's face, accusing Windows Vista of not being optimized for those SSDs. The next-generation drives due out soon require more advanced controllers (the stuff that interfaces with the drive itself), which "need to basically compensate for Vista's shortfalls." SanDisk's chairman and CEO follows up with "performance in the Vista environment falls short of what the market really needs and that is why we need to develop the next generation." Seriously though, if this is true, we hope Windows 7 solves these issues so we can finally get some flash action up in our laptops. Solid-State drives (SSDs) have had a lot of coverage lately, mostly negative. Battery life, performance, reliability, those sorts of things have been under close scrutiny of late. Monday, in SanDisk's earnings call, SanDisk placed the blame for at least one of those issues squarely on Microsoft's shoulders. Sramana Mitra submits: On Monday, SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK), a leading flash storage cards supplier, reported disappointing second quarter results that yet again missed analyst estimates . Results were driven by falling NAND flash prices and oversupply despite increasing demand. There are reports that Apple might change this situation with the huge demand for 3G iPhones and its ripple effect. Apple (AAPL), which sold about a million 3G iPhones in the first weekend alone, has reportedly placed an order for 50 million 8Gb NAND chips with Samsung, following an order of 25 million chips in June.
