Carolina GM Jim Rutherford , 59, is busy these days. Late this season, he became a father for the fourth time, so he’s spending his days with a two-month-old son. Why hurry back to the office if you’re Rutherford? He’s got some difficult decisions to make this summer. The Hurricanes, despite a ridiculous amount of injuries this season, lost three of their final four games this season to miss the playoffs by two points. So they’re not exactly a reclamation project. But they’re aging quickly on defense and they have a bunch of soon-to-be free agents – restricted and unrestricted – that will require keen decision-making by Rutherford. The fact that the Hurricanes figured making the playoffs into their budget this season means they won’t have as much to spend this summer, so they won’t be big spenders on the market. Forwards The Hurricanes have nine NHL-level forwards under contract through at least next season -- Eric Staal, Erik Cole, Rod Brind’Amour, Ray Whitney, Justin Williams, Matt Cullen, Scott Walker, Sergei Samsonov and Jeff Hamilton. Total: $28,450,000. Brind’Amour and Williams both missed the end of the season with serious knee injuries. That’s particularly troubling in the case of Brind’Amour, who is 37 years old with lots of mileage. He did, however, put up 51 points in 59 games before the injury. Samsonov, who played his way off two teams before he got to Carolina, was signed to a three-year contract ...
