I guess I need to write a bestseller attacking religion if I want to draw that kind of traffic. Banks Religion News Service (RNS) A church-state watchdog group has joined Hindu and Jewish organizations in arguing that a Utah court erred in ruling that a highway cross memorializing a fallen state trooper is a "secular symbol of death." A friend-of-the-court brief was filed Wednesday (Aug. 6) in the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver by Americans United for Separation of Church and State and several other groups, including the Anti-Defamation League, the Union for Reform Judaism and the Hindu American Foundation. "When used as a burial marker, the cross does not signify death in the abstract," they argued. "Instead it connotes the deceased's Christian faith." Last November ruling, U.S. District Judge David Sam ruled that the Utah Highway Patrol Association could continue to erect 12-foot crosses, as it has for 14 troopers. "The cross is the pre-eminent symbol of Christianity," said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of the Washington-based Americans United. "For the government to claim that the cross is a secular symbol is deeply offensive and betrays a poor understanding of religion and our Constitution." At the time of last year's decision, a state trooper's widow said she was pleased the symbol could stand. "We made this sacrifice along with him, and we get to have this symbol of what happened," Andrea Augenstein, widow of Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Dan Harris, told The Salt Lake Tribune. The grou ...

A new album and a new baby have left Sam Harris counting his blessings, but not counting sheep. While big-name atheism is big on the bestseller charts recently thanks to Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris, Religulous is the first big-name documentary to take on the world of faith. Directed by Larry Charles ( Borat ), Religulous seems to promise a mix of thought-provoking commentary and laugh-inducing uncomfortable silences. WHY WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT IT: After months of Presidential candidates droning on about what their faith means to them, doesn't a sharp shot of pointed questions and cold, hard logic sound refreshing? Maher's also far smarter than his shtick seems, and after Borat , we'd watch anything Charles offered as a follow-up. We're also looking forward to counting the number of times the phrase "preaching to the converted" gets used in Religulous 's reviews. How good is Dominique Franks? Good enough to push Lendy Holmes off the corner and back to free safety spot. Franks was a one man show at the spring game which caused me to wonder why he wasn’t starting in the secondary when we previewed defensive backs a week ago. "It's been good having Lendy over there working with Dom, and in all honesty Dom's had a pretty good camp,” secondary coach Bobby Jack Wright said Thursday. "He's gotten much better the last couple of days.” Since that time Franks has stepped up to force the issue and change the mind of OU’s defensive coaches. The move isn’t derogatory towards Holmes but rather an acknowledgment of his versatility. The odd man out now is Sam Proctor who will move from being penciled in as the starting strong safety to backing up Nic Harris who slides over from the free safety spot to strong safety.
