I can already hear the response of many English taxpayers to the idea: "Are you having a laugh?" I am in Edinburgh where this afternoon Scotland's first minister will formally ask Westminster for a billion quid. But this is no joke. It is feared that tens of thousands of jobs will be lost before Christmas north of the border pushing unemployment up by a third. An economy built upon banking and financial services is in deep trouble. Alex Salmond heads a special economic cabinet meeting at which he will tell colleagues that Scotland is "facing extraordinary and highly volatile circumstances". "Everything must be done to protect jobs, investment and household incomes" the SNP leader will argue. Mr Salmond, in pleading for financial assistance, will claim that he is only asking for what his nation is owed. "It makes every sense for the tight and unfair Westminster controls on Scotland's budget to be relaxed - so that we can invest in a package to support the real economy and stave off the threat of recession", his spokesman has said. The dread phrase 'Barnett formula' shall issue forth and ancient argument and enmity shall flow. The formula is used to calculate how much UK money should be allocated to Scotland - a complex sum that results in Scotland receiving more public cash per head than the English. However, Mr Salmond claims that the arithmetic is unfair because money for the London Olympics, prison building and police and fire ...

Alan Cochrane’s Telegraph article, examining the impact of the financial crisis on Scottish nationalism is worth reading. Iain Martin adds his comments on Three Line Whip. “The Nationalists look worried, I am told, about the upcoming Glenrothes by-election and no wonder. It's there for Labour to win now……. With banks being bailed out and markets melting down would Scots really fancy being on their own? Of course not.”Both men point to Alex Salmond’s description of an ‘arc of prosperity’, whereby he wishes to add Scotland to a series of independent northern European states, perceived to have achieved economic success. One of the chief of these is Iceland, much to the satisfaction of Scottish Unionist. Another is the Republic of Ireland, which fell into official... Alex Salmond agreed to hand over £215,000 for an Islamic festival in Scotland following a meeting with a former military commander of the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas. Documents obtained by The Sunday Times reveal Salmond approved the grant following the meeting between culture minister Linda Fabiani and Mohammed Sawalha, who is alleged to have directed terror operations in the West Bank. The meeting, in January, was also attended by Osama Saeed, founder of the Scottish Islamic Foundation (SIF) and an SNP activist who is expected to contest the Glasgow Central seat at the next Westminster election. Sawalha was invited to take part in the meeting to discuss the funding of IslamFest in Glasgow next year. The event, being organised by the SIF, is modelled on London’s IslamExpo, run by Sawalha. IslamExpo was boycotted by UK ministers earlier this year because of its links to Hamas. Sunday Times, 12 October 2008 See also Scotland on Sunday which reports: A spokesman for Fabiani said: "The former Labour London mayor Ken Livingstone suggested meeting the official organisers of IslamExpo, and Ms Fabiani met with them in that capacity to hear about their experiences of running this highly successful inter-community event. It would be totally inappropriate to have such routine matters determined by unproven allegations against any individual, who has not been questioned in this country for any wrongdoing." He added: "Scotland has strong in ...
