NEW YORK - Rookie defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson suffered what Savvy called an "upper body" injury in the first period of Friday's 4-2 loss to the Rangers and will be evaluated on Saturday. If Hjalmarsson can't play Saturday in Washington, Matt Walker would make his debut. It will be interesting to see what happens if Hjalmarsson's injury is long term, perhaps a shoulder. I've heard several posters state that the Panthers will probably not be able to sign Peppers, Gross and Gamble. But I've been thinking and I don't see why we cannot. 1) The Salary Cap increases every year. 2) Peppers contract is so high in terms of Salary Cap that even a huge contract will end up being less against the Cap. 3) Gross's current Cap number is also high due to him having the franshise tag placed on. A new deal will have a lower Cap hit. 4) Next season the panthers will not have a 1st round draft pick. While this Cap number isn't huge it still adds up. With this being said I see plenty of room to get Gamble and any of the other lesser known FA a raise and be under the Cap. Is my logic correct or am I missing something? ... The Chicago Blackhawks placed goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin on waivers today. Khabibulin appeared to be the goalie on the way out after the Blackhawks made a surprising dip into the free agent pool and signed UFA keeper Cristobal Huet to a 4 year deal worth $22.5 million. Khabibulin was on the final year of a 4 year deal worth $27 million. The Blackhawks are believed to working on a trade for the Khabibulin but his high Salary makes moving him difficult, if not impossible. The Pittsburgh Penguins got some rough news today (as did NHL Fantasy Managers) when they announced that the club would be without star defenceman Sergei Gonchar for 4-6 months. Gonchar will undergo surgery to repair his left shoulder. Gonchar was injured during the a pre-season game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Penguins also lost defenceman Ryan Whitney till December with a foot injury. The Anaheim Ducks re-signed forward Teemu Selanne to a two year deal worth $5.25 million this week, just days after clearing Cap space by trading defenceman Matthieu Schneider to the Atlanta Thrashers. You might have seen a short woman with a Reds shirt and Reds Cap running around campus trying to meet with people who could help spread the word that we were driving voters to vote (over 500 for the week!)
