The Christian Science Monitor - A few months ago, Sgt. First Class Robert Rollheiser and his platoon were locked in fierce battle in Sadr City with the Mahdi Army (JAM), a Shiite militia. Today, they're surrounded by a Group of locals just a few miles from the city where a woman has accused some local boys of belonging to JAM. ...

The militia that was once the biggest defender of poor Shiite Muslims in Iraq, the Mahdi Army, has been profoundly weakened in a number of Baghdad neighborhoods, in an important, if tentative, milestone for stability in Iraq. It is a remarkable change from years past, when the militia, led by the anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, controlled a broad swath of Baghdad, including local governments and police forces. But the Mahdi Army's use of extortion and violence alienated much of the Shiite population to the point that many quietly supported U.S. military raids against the Group. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, also a Shiite, struck another blow this spring, when he led a military operation against the militia in Baghdad and in several southern cities. ...

At least eight women and one man are reported to have been sentenced to death by stoning in Iran. The Group, convicted of adultery and sex offences, could be executed at any time, lawyers defending them say. The lawyers have called on the head of Iran's judiciary to prevent the sentences from being carried out. The last officially reported stoning in Iran last year drew strong criticism from human rights groups and the European Union. The eight women sentenced, whose ages range from 27 to 43, had convictions including prostitution, incest and adultery, Reuters news agency reported. The man, a 50-year-old music teacher, was convicted of illegal sex with a student, reports said. Moratorium imposed Under Iran's Islamic law, stoning to death is the punishment for the crime of adultery. In 2002 Iranian judiciary chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi imposed a moratorium on stoning, but at least three people are reported to have been executed by stoning since then. Shadi Sadr from the Volunteer Lawyers' Network, which is representing the women, said: "We are very worried as there are at least eight women and one man with a definitive verdict which can be carried out any moment. Under Iran's strict penal code, men convicted of adultery should be buried up to their waists and women up to their chests for stoning. The stones used should not be large enough to kill the person immediately. ...

Iraq's main Shia political bloc and supporters of firebrand cleric Muqtada al-Sadr signed a fragile ceasefire in Baghdad's Sadr City yesterday. The U.S. military has alleged that most Shia extremists fighting Iraqi and U.S. forces in the slum have splintered from Mr. al-Sadr's Mahdi Army, and that the cleric's level of influence on those rogue groups is unclear. ...

Once-powerful Shiite militia no longer seen as threat to stability BAGHDAD -- The militia that was once the biggest defender of poor Shiites in Iraq, the Mahdi Army, has been profoundly weakened in a number of neighborhoods across Baghdad, in an important, if tentative, milestone for stability in Iraq.It is a remarkable change from years past, when the militia, led by the anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, controlled a broad swath of Baghdad, including local governments and police forces. But its use of extortion and violence began alienating much of the Shiite population to the point that many quietly supported American military sweeps against the Group. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki struck another blow this past spring, when he led a military operation against it in Baghdad and in several southern cities. The shift, if it holds, would solidify a transfer of power from al-Sadr, who had lorded his once broad political support over the government, to al-Maliki, who is increasingly seen as a true national leader. It is part of a general decline in violence that is resonating in American as well as Iraqi politics: Sen. John McCain argues that the advances in Iraq would have been impossible without the increase in American troops known as the surge, while Sen. Barack Obama, who opposed the increase, says the security improvements should allow a faster withdrawal of troops. The Mahdi Army's decline also means that the Iraqi state, ...
