WASHINGTON — Saddam Hussein's intelligence agency secretly financed a trip to Iraq for three U.S. Lawmakers during the run-up to the U.S.-led invasion, federal prosecutors said Wednesday. The three anti-war Democrats made the trip in October 2002, while the Bush administration was trying to persuade Congress to authorize military action against Iraq. While traveling, they called for a diplomatic solution. Prosecutors say that trip was arranged by Muthanna Al-Hanooti, a Michigan charity official, who was charged Wednesday with setting up the junket at the behest of Saddam's regime. Iraqi intelligence officials allegedly paid for the trip through an intermediary and rewarded Al-Hanooti with 2 million barrels of Iraqi oil. The Lawmakers are not named in the indictment but the dates correspond to a trip by Democratic Reps. Jim McDermott of Washington, David Bonior of Michigan and Mike Thompson of California. None was charged and Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd said investigators "have no information whatsoever" any of them knew the trip was underwritten by Saddam. "Obviously, we didn't know it at the time," McDermott spokesman Michael DeCesare said Wednesday. "The trip was to see the plight of the Iraqi children. That's the only reason we went." Both McDermott and Thompson are popular among liberal voters in their reliably Democratic districts for their anti-war views. Bonior is no longer in Congress. ...

U.S. Representative Jim McDermott (D-Washington) Never let is be said that all sins go unpunished in this life time. The New York Times is reporting that Congressman Jim McDermott (the same Jim McDermott who flew to Iraq courtesy of Saddam Hussein ) is being ordered by a federal judge to pay Congressman John Boehner (R-Ohio) $1 Million in legal fees as a result of two Florida Democrat activists connected to McDermott illegally taping Boehner's cell phone call with Newt Gingrich while he was driving on Interstate 75 near Lake City, Florida. We thought the Democrats were against wiretapping. Apparently they're only against wiretapping for terrorists. Taping the phone calls of Republican Lawmakers, is another story... ...

Remember when three Congressmen (including Jim McDermott of Seattle) traveled to Baghdad before the war? Apparently Saddam paid for the trip. According to the AP: An indictment unsealed in Detroit accuses Muthanna Al-Hanooti, a member of a Michigan nonprofit group, of arranging for three members of Congress to travel to Iraq in October 2002 at the behest of Saddam's regime. Prosecutors say Iraqi intelligence officials paid for the trip through an intermediary. . . . The Lawmakers are not named in the indictment but the dates correspond to a trip by Seattle Democratic McDermott, David Bonior of Michigan and Mike Thompson of California. There was no indication the three Lawmakers knew the trip was underwritten by Saddam. The trip earned McDermott the moniker "Baghdad Jim." So McDermott goes to Baghdad to disagree with the Commander-in-Chief and the trip was paid for by the enemy. If that's not illegal, it should be. "Obviously we didn't know it at the time," McDermott spokesman Michael DeCesare said today. "The trip was to see the plight of the Iraqi children. That's the only reason we went." Right. ...

I didn’t miss this item from a week ago, but haven’t blogged on it until now: Saddam Hussein’s intelligence agency secretly financed a trip to Iraq for three U.S. Iraqi intelligence officials allegedly paid for the trip through an intermediary and rewarded Al-Hanooti with 2 million barrels of Iraqi oil. Now that it’s been over a week, I have three questions: Isn’t it amazing that the duped (Congressmen “Baghdad Jim” McDermott of WA, Thompson of CA, and former Congressman David Bonior of MI) have, as far as I can tell, expressed absolutely no shame or regret over being duped by our enemy into being his puppet-spokesmen? How typical is it for a congresscritter to just jump on a plane without vetting who is paying for the trip? Isn’t it remarkable how quickly the story dropped off the radar? ________________________________________ I did miss this when it was first reported — from the March 22 Toronto Globe and Mail : Takin ...

Seems those Dems that went to Iraq in 2002 had their trip arranged and funded by Saddam. I can't wait to hear how they twist this into being "not an issue." The Justice Department said Wednesday that Saddam Hussein’s principal foreign intelligence agency and an Iraqi-American man had organized and paid for a 2002 visit to Iraq by three House Democrats whose trip was harshly criticized by colleagues at the time. The arrangements for the trip were described in the indictment of an Iraq-born former employee of a Detroit-area charity group who was charged Wednesday with accepting millions of dollars’ worth of Iraqi oil contracts in exchange for assisting the Iraqi spy agency in projects in the United States. The indictment did not claim any wrongdoing by the three Lawmakers, whose five-day trip to Iraq occurred in October 2002, five months before the American invasion. Two continue to serve in the House: Jim McDermott of Washington State and Mike Thompson of California. The other, David E. Bonior of Michigan, has since retired from Congress. “None of the Congressional representatives are accused of any wrongdoing, and we have no information whatsoever that any of them were aware of the involvement of the Iraqi Intelligence Service,” said Dean Boyd, a Justice spokesman. No wrong doing, but between the incompetence of the state department approval and the obvious run against the standing Administrations policy, this just looks ...
