We're but a scant few years removed from Eddie Jordan calling Bobby Hurley his opening night starter, Mitch Richmond playing an entire year as trade bait, and a somewhat youthful Anthony Johnson turning into the team's biggest surprise. Welcome to the first Sacramento Kings Ambassador Report, just in time for tonight's pre-season throwdown. Dave's previews haven't hit the Western Conference yet, so I'll steal a little bit of his thunder and bottle some of his lightning to give you a peek at the Kings. First let's start with some background. The Kings recorded their second straight losing season after making the playoffs back in 2005-06. They charged hard at the end of last season and finished 1 spot behind the Blazers at 38-44. The Kings were lead by rising star Kevin Martin, who averaged team highs of 23.7 point/game (on 45.6% shooting) and 36.3 minutes/game, and the workhorse Brad Miller, who averaged 9.5 rebounds and 1.03 blocks/game. The Kings made a big mid-season trade, sending Mike Bibby to Atlanta for Sheldon Williams, Anthony Johnson, and Lorenzon Wright. It was a busy off-season for the Kings. Ron Artest flirted with opting out, then chose to stay, then immediately regretted it, while letting the whole world know as the drama unfolded. Artest was finally dealt to the Rockets for youth and expiring contracts. Beno Udrih was courted by Golden State, but ended up staying with the Kings. SAR retired, and Francisco Gargia was given a contract extension. Fan favorite Bobby Jackson returned to the team. During the draft, the Sactown Royalty site imploded when the Kings, instead of making a move for a young PG, seemingly reached by drafting Jason Thompson, alt ...

DRAFT PICKS: Jason Thompson, PF, 6-11, Rider -- The productive big man was the early surprise of the draft -- many expected the Kings to take LSU's Anthony Randolph.   The Spencer Hawes saga has been very interesting to me. On the one hand, we have a 20 year old kid with about 930 minutes to his NBA career (the equivalent of about 26 games if you were using 36 minutes per night).  He is still growing into his body, and he is still learning the NBA game. On the other hand, he is an adult pulling down a wage of $2.2 million this year, he is outspoken in a confident/cocky sort of way, and he did finish last year with some promise. Let's digest that for a moment. He finished last year in promising fashion , posting April numbers of 11 pts., 7 boards, a block and 2 assists per game. The consensus on Hawes was anywhere from cautious to unbridled optimism, with everyone applauding Geoff Petrie for another fine pick (by everyone, I mean everyone not enamored with Al Thornton - the same Al Thornton that would have been fourth on the depth chart behind Artest/Salmons/Garcia - the same Al Thornton that finished 109th in FG% - but I digress...). So what has occurred since then? A ho-hum summer league, followed by one-truly-lousy-foul-plagued-game and one-very-promising-game-that-still-drew-concern-from-some-fans.  The pessimists will tell you that Hawes should have dominated in summer league, and as a "veteran" he should have schooled Greg Oden. The optimists will tell you that (a) this is just summer league and preseason and (b) the kid is still learning. The verdict here would be easy - it's early. Ea ...
