For those that did not hear, some notes from last night. Thanks to Joe Dunn for getting those questions out. 1. STEC knows he needs to get better. If he doesn't, Hildreth is ready to go. JD made it sound like STEC is at the end of his rope. We may see a change this weekend if he has a bad punt. 2. They really want to redshirt Torrence. Don't expect to see him this year. 3. Martin, the RB from Louisville is not doing much now. He named about 4 body parts where this guy has injuries. They want him full go for the spring. 4. The FR LBs that are redshirting are the real deal. JD does not see a need to get a JUCO LB. These kids will be able to step in. 5. Rodgers is as far along as anyone JD has seen at this age. His preparation reminds JD of Gary Kubiak. No heistation to put Rodgers in if Jacg goes down. If he does come in, he will make mistakes just from an experience factor. ... While we first flagged up the Inspiron Mini 9 ’s upgrade potential earlier this week , Dell have gone one stage further and posted the netbook’s service manual on their site. Diagrams explain how to dismantle the budget ultraportable, flagging up key components such as the SSD and Bluetooth, as well as highlighting screws and latches. The Mini 9 appears to have a WWAN antenna preinstalled, even if the WWAN card - not in fact currently available - is not specified at time of order. There’s also some controversy about what type of SSD Dell are fitting; the manual indicates an older, slower unit from Intel, while other reports - such as pre-production reviews - are stating it’s a faster STEC SSD. Dell seem to be actively encouraging modification of the Mini 9, with little soldering of main components and room left over for added extras. Increasing the onboard storage and adding WWAN is likely to be the first assault on the netbook, both of which would seem relatively straightforward. I'm thinking that Dell didn't go with a solid state drive module that's soldered on the motherboard of the Inspiron Mini 9. Actually, that was my first thought when I heard you could configure your netbook for 4-, 8-, or 16-GB of SSD capacity. It's far less expensive to have one base motherboard with an SSD module that you can add to on the fly. My second clue was during the LAPTOP Magazine live video stream of the Dell Mini 9. Joanna Stern was kind enough to check the BIOS as I asked in the chat room. When she did that, she saw that the hard drive model was a STEC SSD x.x (sorry, I forget the numbers she read off). Some quick research let me to STEC Inc ., which used to be known as SimpleTech, a make of flash memory modules and drives. I can't be sure exactly which of their products is used, but my gut leads me to their mini PCI-Express card. That would make the Dells easy for a "build-to-order" approach. There are some other STEC flash products that could be inside, but I think they're too big, i.e.: they're the size of traditional hard drives and Dell has already said they see the netbook market better served by SSD and not magnetic hard drives. That doesn't mean they didn't go this route, but my best guess is that they didn't. If I'm right, this could be good news. Why?
