The SIXERS announced the signing of Theo Ratliff for the 10-year veterans’ minimum of $1.26 million. The 35-year-old Ratliff, who was a Sixer from 1997-2001, should serve as the backup to starter Samuel Dalembert. Ratliff pocketed $12.1 million last year — $11.7 million from the Timberwolves and $420,000 — the pro-rated minimum — from the Pistons. The 6-foot-10, 230-pound Ratliff split last season between Minnesota and Detroit, averaging 4.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 16.7 minutes during 26 games in 2007-08. While Ratliff cannot play 35 minutes a night like he did in earning an spot on the Eastern Conference all-star team as a Sixer in 2000-01, he can still block shots and protect the paint. Ratliff is one of seven players in NBA history to lead the league in blocks in at least three seasons (2000-01, 2002-03 and 2003-04). He ranks 18th all-time in total blocks (1,855) and is seventh among active players. “We are very fortunate to sign a player of Theo’s caliber,” said team physician Ed Stefanski in a statement. “He is a consummate professional, both on the court and off, who will provide us with additional depth in the front court while also serving as a mentor to some of our younger players.” The SIXERS’ need for Ratliff increased after Jason Smith tore his left ACL doing a basketball drill earlier this month. Smith was examined Tuesday afternoon by Dr. David Altchek, an orthopaedic surgeon in New York. The new MRIs ...

The Philadelphia 76ers made it official on Monday and re-signed restricted free agent swingman Andre Iguodala to a new contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but a report in the Philadelphia Daily News said the two sides had agreed to a six-year pact worth $80 million. Iguodala could have played the upcoming season on a one-year qualifying offer before becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer. "We have maintained since the beginning of this process that Andre was a main priority for us because he is one of the best all-around young players in the league and an integral part to the success of our team," said SIXERS president and general manager Ed Stefanski. "We are excited that we are able to keep a player with Andre's talent, athleticism and work ethic here in Philadelphia." The SIXERS selected Iguodala with the ninth overall pick of the 2004 NBA Draft. He has played and started 322 of a possible 328 games in his four-year career, averaging 14.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists. ...

The Philadelphia 76ers officially signed free agent center Theo Ratliff Wednesday. Ratliff (6-10, 238) has played for six teams during his 13 NBA seasons, including a 215-game stint with the SIXERS from mid-December of 1997 till late February of 2001. In 705 career games with 504 starts, Ratliff has averaged 7.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.63 blocks in 27.0 minutes per game while shooting 49.7 percent from the floor and 71.1 percent from the line. He has also appeared in 33 career playoff games with 17 starts, averaging 6.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.91 blocks in 22.2 minutes per game. "We are very fortunate to sign a player of Theo's caliber," SIXERS GM Ed Stefanski said. One of seven players in NBA history to lead the league in blocks in at least three seasons (2000-01, 2002-03 and 2003-04), Ratliff ranks 18th all-time in total blocks (1,855) and is seventh among active players. He also owns the ninth-highest blocks per game average in league history and is fourth among active players. The SIXERS now have three players who rank among the NBA’s top-11 active all-time leaders in blocks per game (Elton Brand, Samuel Dalembert and Ratliff). ...

The Moberly Post 6 SIXERS baseball team finished another successful Senior American Legion campaign this summer finishing with a record of 32-8 under 14-year head coach Bruce Pinkston. The SIXERS also won its fourth straight District 2 championship which was their 10th title in 14 years, and Moberly was Zone 1 tournament runner-up finishers after losing the championship game to Columbia Post 202 in late July. The 18-member team ranging mostly in age 16-19 was comprised of players from Moberly, Higbee, Huntsville, Cairo, Salisbury, Madison and Paris. About one-half of the SIXERS will be too old to return next season. As a 15-year old, Corey Embree of Moberly led the SIXERS offense hitting .463 (44-95) hitting 8 home runs and had 45 RBIs. There were a couple of players who batted .400; Kaleb Petersheim, 18, of Moberly (36-106) and Nathaniel Simmerman, 19, of Madison (34-100). Trey Barrow, 19, Moberly, hit .339. Moberly SIXERS hit .315 as a team this season reported coach Pinkston. Brent Gholson, 19, of Paris, led the pitching staff posting a 9-1 record making 22 game appearances. In 51 innings pitched, Gholson had an ERA of 3.02, struck out 33 batters and walked 17. Blake Wilson, 18, Cairo was 7-1 with an ERA of 2.13. In 46 innings, Wilson fanned 49 batters and walked 20. Theo Ratliff, who played for the SIXERS from 1997 to 2001 and has since played with five different franchises, is coming back to Philly after signing a one year deal with the SIXERS. Ratliff is 35 years old, but is still a decent big man with good shot blocking abilities. While this isn't an earth shattering move, signing another big man became a necessity after the SIXERS learned they may be without Jason Smith for the year, and Ratliff makes a good veteran compliment to Samuel Dalembert at the center position. This signing completes your 2008-2009 SIXERS roster. Here is the team that will take the floor next season: Starters: PG Andre Miller SG Andre Iguodala SF Thaddeus Young PF Elton Brand C Samuel Dalembert Bench: PG Louis Williams SG Kareem Rush SG Willie Green SG Royal Ivey PF Reggie Evans F/C Marreese Speights C Theo Ratliff F/C Jason Smith (Inj.) Ed Stefanski has built the deepest SIXERS team I have seen in a long time. Every player on the roster is useful, every player has a role. The only problem I see is that there are too many guards on the roster, so we might see Willie Green traded for a draft pick or cash. ...

With the Spectrum, the building that housed the last championship team in Philadelphia history, set to be demolished later this year, two teams that made plenty of history there will be giving it a proper send-off this season. Both the Flyers and SIXERS will play one last game in the Spectrum this season, with the Flyers playing a preseason game against the Carolina Hurricanes on September 27th and the SIXERS playing a regular season game against the Chicago Bulls on March 13th, 2009. The Flyers chose to play a preseason game in the Spectrum because it holds fewer people then the Wachovia Center but apparently that wasn't an issue for the SIXERS. The Flyers regularly sell out their games so they might have had to leave season ticket holders in the dark, but the SIXERS don't generally play to full capacity, although that could change this year with the signing of Elton Brand. Keep in mind that the Philadelphia Phantoms, the Flyers minor league afilliate, will also be playing their final season in the Spectrum, so if you can't get tickets for the Flyers or SIXERS game, you can still experience the Spectrum during a Phantoms game. The Phantoms will play their first home game on October 10th and their season will end in April or May. ...
