I’m not sure there was a better story in the college basketball season than Georgia’s magical run in the SEC Tournament that basically saved Dennis Felton’s job. Felton’s team reeled off four straight games – including a pair in one day – and earned an improbable spot in the NCAA Tournament last season. Gone are leading scorer Sundiata Gaines, fellow senior Dave Bliss and even Billy Humphrey. But Felton is excited about the future with the addition of a strong freshman class led by the most highly touted recruit in the Felton Era – Howard “Trey” Thompkins. ``I think it’ll be a team that everyone has a hard time getting a handle on going into the season,” Felton said. “But I love our team with all these talented, young guys. I love their character and their chemistry.” It didn’t hurt that the holdovers – seniors Terrance Woodberry and Corey Butler – as well as junior Albert Jackson and sophomores Jeremy Price, Zac Swansey, Chris Barnes and Troy Brewer – were all apart of the special run last March down in Atlanta. ``It was big for all those guys to go through that,” Felton said. “But it started to happen before that week. A couple of guys had to go and the rest of the guys had the ability to pull together through the struggles in the middle of the season and that was the only reason they were able to win the SEC championship.” Swansey and freshman Dustin Ware will share the point guard duties. Swansey has a year of experience, but ...

"Every day ordinary people do extraordinary things. It is similar to baseball where ordinary teams can do extraordinary things." John Pawlowski hopes his Auburn team can do something extraordinary. This may sound crazy, but Auburn has not cracked the SEC top eight in five seasons. A new season will bring new challenges for the Marquette Golden Eagles and new coach Buzz Williams. Looking to build off last year's 25-10 record and its first victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament since 2003, MU this season will play a total of 14 games against teams that advanced to the post-season in 2007-'08, with seven of those to be played at the Bradley Center. Nine of those teams competed in the NCAA Tournament along with MU: Wisconsin, Tennessee, Villanova, West Virginia, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Connecticut, Louisville and Pittsburgh. The Golden Eagles will play Villanova and Georgetown both home and away in Big East play. "We put the schedule together with the idea that is prepares us in the best possible way for the post-season," Williams said in a statement.  "We play a Big Ten opponent at home, a SEC opponent at a neutral site and an ACC opponent on the road -- each of these challenges will prepare us for Big East play."  Williams' first regular-season game at the helm of MU will be on Nov. 14 against Houston-Baptist, with the rest of November highlighted by a Nov. 22 matchup with UW-Milwaukee at the Bradley Center and games against Northern Iowa and Dayton on Nov. 28 and 29, respectively, as part of the Chicago Invitational in Hoffman Estates, Ill. MU will also host inter-state rival Wisconsin on Dec. 6 at 8:30 p.m. in a game to be televised nationally on ESPNU, and then travel to face Tennessee in the Bi ...

A couple of the ESPN pundits (Mark Schlabach and Bruce Feldman) now have Maryland slotted into the Chick-fil-A Bowl against Mississippi. That's the Atlanta bowl (the former Peach Bowl) pitting the ACC against the SEC. A tad early, isn't it fellows? I understand that speculation like this is fun -- more fun for Maryland partisans if the Terps are looking at some of the higher-end bowls instead of the middling ones. Always nice to window-shop at Tiffany's. The Terps have earned the right to think big. Forecasts like this are what drive the Web these days, I guess. My favorite "predictions" are the ones that forecast all the brackets of the NCAA hoops Tournament as if the experts not only know the 64 teams, but can foresee the regions in which they'll be slotted. Can they tell me what the stock market is going to do and when? Then I'd have that going for me ... The Terps, by the way, lead the "also receiving votes" pack in AP's latest top 25. And ... you all probably saw that former Terp Nick Novak kicked four field goals on Sunday for the Chiefs. Thanks for the many kind comments this week about our blog and coverage. ...

ESPNsoccernet - England - It's always club over country for Carragher (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=569059&SEC=england&campaign=rss&source=soccernet&cc=3436) Jamie Carragher speaking out about putting club before country. Some quote from the article 'Representing your country is the ultimate honour, especially in the World Cup. Not to me.' 'Did I care we'd gone out of the Tournament? Of course I did. Passionately. I've never given less than 100% in any game. 'Despite this, whenever I returned home from disappointing England experiences one unshakeable, overriding thought pushed itself to the forefront of my mind, no matter how much the rest of the nation mourned. 'At least it wasn't Liverpool,' I'd repeat to myself, over and over. 'I would rather miss for England than LFC,' thoughts? ...

The new season of SEC football on CBS marked the beginning of a new era in football broadcasting on Saturday. While the network televised South Carolina’s game with Georgia, anyone with a high-speed Internet connection could also watch the game live. This season, every SEC football game on CBS will also be streamed on CBSSports.com. The new feature is an offshoot of the 15-year contract CBS signed with the SEC last month. Network officials see the move as an extension of CBSSports.com’s March Madness on Demand feature, which allows fans to watch NCAA Tournament games live for free in March. “We’re excited to give fans the ability to watch live college football for free on CBSSports.com from one of the most competitive conferences in the country,” Jason Kint, CBSsports.com’s senior vice president and general manager said in a statement. “As we’ve already seen with the huge success of March Madness on Demand, one of our main goals is to give fans without access to a TV the ability to view as many of the first-class productions of CBS Sports as possible, either on the Internet or via wireless devices, allowing them to enjoy the thrill of live sporting events.” ...

The Gazelles open at home this week hosting the Time Warner Invitational.  The Gazelles are ranked #3 in the nation returning to that spot after Stanford suffered a 4 set defeat to unranked Saint Louis last weekend.  Coach Elliott gave me a personal call on my home phone yesterday requesting I invite friends and neighbors.  So I'm inviting the BON community. Bevo Bargains $4 Web coupons for both night's matches at Bevo Bargains.   GAME 1 - 6:30 pm Thursday night against Texas State. Texas State is the preseason pick to win the Southland Conference.  I expect this match to be the most competitive one for Texas in the Tournament.  By competitive, I mean a 3 set sweep by the Gazelles. GAME 2 - Noon Friday against old SWC foe, Houston.  Houston is picked to finish 6th in Conference USA.  This match will be won handily by the Gazelles. GAME 3 - 6:30 pm Friday against Georgia.  Georgia is picked to finish 4th in the SEC East which includes Top 10 rated Florida.  Georgia will likely finish 3rd in the East due to some serious injuries by 3rd place pick Tennessee.  The best part of this match will be pregame when the Gazelles raise the 2007 Big 12 Championship banner to the rafters of Gregory Gym. ...
