Siberia Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) Yesterday we were asked if we could add the 'Siberia Tomato' to our list of heritage tomatoes. Every year we have requests to grow more of the old fashioned varieties. So I said I would try to find the seeds, and a bit of background on this plant. Actually it is a rather fascinating beast. To start with, I found two varieties with similar names, 'Siberia and Siberian ' . Unfortunately the two varieties are not always kept separate in seed catalogues, and both are often combined into one species. When comparing to our customer's description, she was referring to 'Siberia'. The Siberia has a brilliant deep red colour, while the Siberian shows more orange tones. The Siberia also has slightly larger and rounder fruit than the Siberian. The confusion stems from the fact they are both cool weather plants, but could you expect any less from Russian varieties? The so called history of this tomato (oral and undocumented) is that this variety was smuggled out of Russia in 1975. According to the lore, the seeds arrived in North America in the pockets of a Gardening Tourist, a Diplomat, a Defector, etc, etc, depending on who relates the story. Siberia tomato facts: Determinate, Sets fruit early, 48-50 days. They are bright red and weigh 115-140 gm (4-5 oz). Reported as being capable of setting fruits at 38°F. Of course, 'Siberia', like any other tomato, is not frost hardy. An excellent cool weather variety ...

The top U.S. Diplomat for Latin America says Washington has "no intention" of reviving Cold War rhetoric despite Russia's deepening relations with Venezuela and Bolivia. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Thomas Shannon says Washington sees no "military or geopolitical threat" in Russian arms sales to Venezuela, or in its sending of a naval squadron to join exercises there. Shannon told The Associated Press Wednesday he believes Russian-Venezuelan ties aren't likely to endure. Russia has been troubled by U.S. efforts to help its neighbors join NATO. The country's ambassador to Bolivia says Russia wants to demonstrate that Latin America is not the United States' backyard. ...

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Wednesday that he sees no ideological grounds for a war with the United States - cold or hot - despite strained relations with Washington and the NATO alliance. Russia's relations with the U.S. were already at a post-Cold War low when they were further damaged by Russia's war with U.S. ally Georgia in August. Russia has complained vehemently about what it says is a growing U.S. military presence near its borders. But Medvedev said Wednesday that the Cold War was based on ideological differences between the Soviet Union and the NATO nations. "We do not have such ideological differences around which a new cold or any other kind of war could start," Medvedev said after talks with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero outside St. Petersburg. Medvedev said he would not "dramatize" troubled ties between Russia and NATO, and warned that NATO needs Russia more than Russia needs NATO. He also said the outcome of the U.S. presidential election should not affect relations between Washington and Moscow. Regardless of who wins the U.S. presidency, "Job No. 1 is to deal with the situation in the economy - that's what must be done." The top U.S. Diplomat for Latin America, Assistant Secretary of State Thomas Shannon, said Wednesday that, despite Russia's diplomatic and military overtures in the region, the U.S. has "no intention of reviving Cold War images or Cold War rhetoric." "This is a co ...
