There's an old journalistic saying (or if there isn't, there should be) that if you have a scoop then it's worth repeating. So amidst all the hoo-ha surrounding old letters of Dr Rowan Williams, in which he discussed his theological view of human sexuality, I thought it might be relevant to repeat what he told me on Sunday, at the conclusion of the Lambeth Conference. I hope that helps in two regards: 1) Dr Rowan Williams clearly distinguishes between his personal views and his public responsibilities, as anyone sound in public life should, and ... I began the second of these plenary addresses with a reminder of the question, "What is Lambeth 08 going to say?" And I suggested that we also needed to ask "Where are we going to speak from?" I hope that in recent days there has been some growing clarity about both of these questions and how we answer them : but today there is no avoiding the question of the central message. ... Rowan Williams believes that gay sexual relationships can âreflect the love of Godâ in a way that is comparable to marriage, The Times has learnt. Gay partnerships pose the same ethical questions as those between men and women, and the key issue for Christians is that they are faithful and lifelong, he believes. Dr Williams is known to be personally liberal on the issue but the strength of his views, revealed in private correspondence shown to The Times, will astonish his critics. The news threatens to reopenbitter divisions over ordaining gay priests, which pushed the Anglican Communion towards a split.... ...

Two C of E Bishops ask Archbishop of Canterbury for 'orderly separation' of Communion Dear Brothers and Sisters, www.virtueonline.org 8/2/2008 The $12 million Lambeth Conference is over and many are now asking was it worth it. What exactly did the 600 plus bishops really accomplish besides long discussions about the rightness or wrongness of pansexual behavior and how Millennium Development Goals will save the world for God? A contrast with GAFCON, a similar Anglican gathering, is instructive. GAFCON: Unity around the gospel. LAMBETH: Disunity ... Source: www.pinknews.co.uk --- 33 days ago

Rowan Williams: pragmatism and belief Editorial From The Times August 7, 2008 A letter from Rowan Williams may reopen argument within the Church of England. But he should not be afraid to voice in public his liberal views It would be naive to suppose, because the Lambeth Conference did not end in schism, that the rifts have been healed or the differences over the most contentious issues narrowed. For two weeks, the 670 bishops were able, through prayer, discussion, personal encounter and a skilful focus on the spiritual rather than the political, to reach out enough to touch each other's point of view, if not to embrace their differences. Now, however, they have returned to their sees around the world. Positions look clearer from afar. Arguments have been reignited. And there is every danger that the harmony temporarily enjoyed in Canterbury will prove too brittle to survive. ... Source: www.lifesite.net --- 35 days ago

LONDON: Bishops back Rowan Williams in gay sex row - even though some don't agree with him Ruth Gledhill, Religion Correspondent The Times http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/faith/article4489022.ece August 9, 2008 Nineteen bishops in the Church of England came to the defence of the Archbishop of Canterbury last night and his views on gay sex. The Bishop of Durham, Dr Tom Wright, who is the Church's fourth most senior cleric, headed the list of bishops who signed a letter to The Times protesting at the "gross misrepresentation" of Dr Rowan Williams. The bishops admit that many among them do not agree with Dr Williams's contention that a same-sex relationship "might . . . reflect the love of God in a way comparable to marriage". But they defend his right to differentiate between his role as theologian and church leader and to uphold "what has been received in faith from scripture and tradition". ...
