The first bottle of Root Beer exploded at just about 10 o’clock in the morning on the Fourth of July. As usual. You need those time-honored traditions to get your holiday off to the right start. Our tradition was that my mother always made Root Beer for the Fourth of July, and it always exploded. I won’t say that Independence Day was better when I was a child, but it certainly was more interesting. ...

Regular as clock work, Bill Fleming and his mother, Sharon Fleming, are in Lincoln Park for the Fourth of July festivities. “We’ve been coming here for five years now,” said Sharon Fleming. “It’s my son’s business, but he lets me come along and help out.” She said that Billy Jack’s Hillbilly Root Beer always has the same location, right by the Lincoln Park Band Dome. “I love it here by all this beautiful entertainment,” Fleming said. “Pittsburg is one of the first shows Bill ever did, and we loving come back every July 4. Everyone is so nice, and this is one of our favorite places.” They sell their Root Beer in cups or bottles, and have a policy of refilling the bottles at a reduced rate. That’s one reason why they have so many repeat customers. “Is that a bottle from last year?” Fleming asked one customer. “Actually, I think it’s from two years ago,” the woman replied. Fleming said that Root Beer is made from an old family recipe, using only natural ingredients. “My son got that recipe from his aunt,” she said. “We only sell our Root Beer at fairs and festivals because it’s not carbonated. That makes it taste mellow and natural, but it won’t hold the fizz for very long.” Fleming said that her son has been hearing impaired since birth. He reads lips very well, but his mother assists him in waiting on the customers. “Bill is in the back, making more Root Beer as fast as he can,” Fleming said. ...

Atheists bond during 'de-baptism' Sarah Pulliam Columbus Dispatch USA August 3, 2008 Allison Page, 9, goes under the ceremonial hair dryer watched by her mother, Amy Page. Performing the ritual is Edward Kagin, national legal director for American Atheists. Photo: Neal J. Lauron/Columbus Dispatch ... "It sounds perhaps frivolous, but it's a very serious thing," [Frank Zindler, president of American Atheists] said before the ceremony. "The event is more of an invitation to a revolution more than a party in a sense. Until we come out of the closet and let people know our numbers, politicians think they can ignore us." Gillian Peiffer, 25, became more vocal about being an atheist after she said she was fired in the fall from a Columbus truck dealership because of her atheism. "It's the last form of discrimination that's still acceptable," Peiffer said. "This is showing those who aren't religious that there are (other) social groups. I'm not going to pretend I'm religious so I can be part of a group," she said before giving water bottles to four protesters. The protesters, from Worthington Christian Church, stood outside with signs that read "God loves you" and "You matter to God." "They're making a decision that there's life without God, and we're concerned about it," protester Matt Lieser said. ... Ever since we first heard of it we've been dying to try out the Root Beer Float Martini ($10) at Kitchen 24 in the Cahuenga Corridor in Hollywood. Is it a cocktail or is it dessert? This concoction shows up at your table as a small scoop of vanilla ice cream in a martini glass and a mini shaker filled with Three Olives Root Beer Vodka and creme de cacao. You pour the sweet dark liquid over your ice cream recreating this soda fountain classic with an alcoholic twist. With the blob of ice cream floating in your martini glass it's sorta awkward to consume. Should you carefully spoon out and eat the ice cream first or let it melt and then drink all that? Whatever you decide, this drink is a delight. It's only missing the fun fizziness of the traditional float. Also, it's too small! The K24 folks should consider using a bigger martini glass. To: Crecente From: Bashcraft RE: Al-Ew-Min-E-Um Yay! New person! Hello new person!! Today, I purchased a can of A&W Root Beer for the equivalent of two bucks. I am pretty sure it is the best money I will spend this week. I've noticed that many of the locals here don't like Root Beer (or Dr. Pepper, for that matter), saying both taste like medicine. Are Root Beer and Dr. Pepper things only (some) Americans like? Or do lovely people from various other countries enjoy these fine beverages as well? The awesome holidays are coming one after another this August. Today is the 100th anniversary of the Root Beer Float, one of our favorite summer treats. Originally called a “black cow” (or a “brown cow, depending on who you believe), it was created by Frank Wisner in Cripple Creek, Colorado. Try out this Root Beer Float inspired cocktail, perfect for tonight’s dessert. Root Beer Float Practically all the Root Beer float cocktail recipes we could find involved Root Beer-flavored schnapps, a fairly disgusting, artificially-flavored concoction that we would as soon avoid. Instead, in this recipe we use a combination of good Root Beer, vodka and Galliano to create a strong Root Beer flavor. 2 oz Galliano 1 oz Vodka Root Beer 1 oz Heavy Cream Combine Galliano, vodka and heavy cream in a tall glass filled with ice. Fill with Root Beer – we prefer Sprecher , but for a Chicago taste, try Goose Island ( Ed. Note: Berghoff can work, as well. All three of these are free of high fructose corn syrup ). Stir to combine. Top with a dollop of whipped cream, preferably homemade, and a Root Beer barrel. For a cute dessert, serve this cocktail alongside a miniature old-fashioned Root Beer float. Fill a shot glass with small scoops of ice cream and another with Root Beer – serve them together and let your guests pour the float. ...

I'm slowly recovering from the fifteen Root Beer floats [belch]  I had yesterday, as well as my weird sunburn (I think I need that colored sunscreen that shows you where you already put it, so you don't get random fingerprints on your shoulders...). Here's some pictures from Friday's game debacle vs. the Rangers, and a lot from Root Beer Float Day yesterday. So, Gallagher pitched both of these games. And strangely enough, each time he got a lead, he gave up exactly the number of runs needed to tie it in the next inning. How convenient.          I needed photographic evidence that this 5-run inning actually happened. Fortunately, I took the picture before the lead magically disappeared.   Ellis summons his unicorn--"Get me out of here!"   And some discontented fans in the bleachers. Not really sure what to say about this sign.   Anyway, on to happier, more sugary times: the 9th annual Root Beer Float Day! There were lots of people there.   Huston was the first player out there, as far as we could tell.       There was a Stomper sighting...   And also a DiNardo sighting...   Eveland was out there for a while too. As I was taking a picture, a couple people asked me who he was. Guess he doesn't quite have the star factor yet.     After a half-hour or so, those players left. We also saw Dallas Braden and some of the coaches, and Glen Kuiper and his family (super cute little kids). So then we waited... and waited... and eventually Swoo ...

Today is Root Beer Float Day at the Coliseum! To those of you who are going, I'm oh so jealous. For the rest of us, hey, let's have a DLD to play with, ok?  :)   I'm sure everyone has already heard about yesterday's trade . John Shea thinks that Huston will be next to be traded. Huston thinks he'll be in Boston for Friday night's game. But for which team?!?!?  (cue suspenseful music) I'm sitting around waiting for the Comcast guy to come fix my still-broken cable, so I think I'll have a Root Beer float for breakfast. :) Happy Root Beer Float Day! via images.teamsugar.com   ...
