There was an interesting line in Wednesday's front-page Wall Street Journal story on alleged Italian con man Rafaello Follieri. Follieri, you'll recall, has been accused , among other things, of squandering $50 million from a partnership involving supermarket billionaire Ron Burkle and former President Bill Clinton, in part on lavish personal luxuries. The Burkle-Clinton swindle is at the heart of the criminal case that got Follieri arrested this week. And yet, the Journal said , Follieri and the partnership "recently settled the [parallel] civil case on undisclosed terms, and Mr. Follieri has begun spending time again with Mr. Burkle , say people familiar with the matter." Wow, Follieri blew millions of dollars of money entrusted to Burkle by his best buddy Clinton, and yet suddenly all was forgiven? I don't suppose Burkle was doing any surreptitious recording during his buddy-buddy time with Rafaello, like he did with Post gossip Jared Paul Stern? The feds are the ones who charged Follieri, and it was also the feds, working with Burkle, who investigated Stern for allegedly attempting to sell Burkle better treatment in his tabloid. Burkle recorded a meeting with Stern to build the extortion case, but nothing came of it: Though reports of the meeting ended up all over the media, the feds never charged Stern with a crime . The fact that there's now a federal charge against Follieri would seem to indicate Burkle was not as forgiving ...

Supermarket billionaire Ron Burkle's name keeps popping up in the oddest places, doesn't it? When conman Rafaello Follieri was finally busted last week, the suit filed against him by his former business partner Burkle kept coming up. Jeffrey Epstein—finally sentenced yesterday for sex with a minor—used to be "very friendly" with Ron. They compared notes on planes! In that Vanity Fair story that upset Bill Clinton so much, it was Burkle who had those unnamed staffers worried about the appearance of impropriety. Now—the oddest one yet?—King of Pop Michael Jackson announced in a court deposition that it was Ron Burkle, along with the Reverend Jesse Jackson, who saved his life when he ran out of money. Burkle brought in the Reverend to help, and Burkle's also done quite a bit of business with the Reverend's son Yusef (they own Radar together! ). What a cast of unlikely characters! Did this rogues' gallery of amoral power-junkies select Ron, or vice versa? Why does the ostensibly liberal do-gooder zillionaire associate with these guys? It's all these Clinton-friending liberal rich people who keep getting into messes these days, isn't it? When's the last time you heard anything about rich Republican financiers and executives flying about the nation with models, fucking teenagers, and carrying on sex orgies with movie stars? Is it the liberal connection to godless Hollywood? Former United Artists CEO and Bush Super Ranger Jerry Weintraub ...

Former Page Sixer Jared Paul Stern's defamation suit against billionaire creep Ron Burkle was recently tossed out, as we all know. But his nutty lawyer Larry Klayman promised an appeal! Unfortunately, that appeal can't go forward in New York just now. Klayman, who is insane , is not allowed to practice law in New York, and Stern's New York attorney just quit , saying his "military service is complete." Yeesh. Still, they'll hire a new guy and fight on. Why? Why continue embarrassing himself further? Stern explained why in a terse statement: "I've got nothing better to do than bury the fucker if it takes 20 years." Enjoy your gadfly, Ron! ...

LA billionaire, Ron Burkle , depicted as a 20-year-old chasing night club troll in the Vanity Fair article that attempted to demystify why Bill Clinton is off his game these days, gave an interview to our own Patrick Range McDonald of the LA Weekly . Several days before the Vanity Fair story hit the Internet, Burkle called me from New York City. I had already met with his spokesman, Frank Quintero , at the Yucaipa offices on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, where we discussed things "off the record" for an hour and a half. Days later, the phone rang and Burkle kindly introduced himself and said he heard the Weekly was writing an "unflattering article" about him. We then chatted amiably for an hour, just before Burkle flew in his private plane to Pittsburgh to watch the Penguins win a Stanley Cup game. When the conversation was over, I contacted Republican political strategist Arnold Steinberg , to ask if Burkle's ready availability was odd in some way. In an e-mail, Steinberg responded: "Ron Burkle is a hands-on guy. That said, it's unusual that he would call a journalist directly and speak at length. ... He must feel he is a good communicator. In fairness, one cannot dismiss the possibility he feels he's in the clear and has a story to tell. In the past, he had political counsel who would handle this situation. Either his political advisers are gone, or [they] advised him to confront the story head on. More likely, he decided ...

Lately, it has looked like Yahoo, against all odds, might win the proxy fight that activist investor Carl Icahn is waging against it. The problem for Icahn is that, without a plan for Yahoo beyond selling it to Microsoft or at least wangling a better deal for Yahoo's search operations, even angry Yahoo shareholders don't want to vote in a board that has no apparent plan for what to do with Yahoo if Microsoft doesn't return. What's more, if a majority of new directors is elected, that may trigger Yahoo's poison pill or at least its potentially expensive employee retention program. Now, activist shareholder Eric Jackson , who got attention last year when he called for former Yahoo CEO Terry Semel's ouster, is offering a third way: Vote for four of Icahn's dissident directors--in particular venture capitalist Adam Dell, who had invested in HotJobs, which Yahoo bought; ad execs Edward Meyer and John Chapple; and Harvard prof and executive-compensation critic Lucian Bebchuk. "Right now, Yahoo has the edge," says Jackson, who now runs a hedge fund, Ironfire Capital. "I wanted to pick people who would be beyond reproach--independent thinkers with no baggage." At the same time, he's recommending withhold votes against Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock, as well as directors Ron Burkle and Arthur Kern, who received a surprisingly high number of such votes last year, and longtime Yahoo director Eric Hippeau. Jackson still faces a big challenge, absent a ...

Despite widespread investor discontent, the recommendations are in and -- for the most part -- Yahoo's board passed. RiskMetrics Group this morning endorsed Yahoo's slate of directors, though it expressed some reservations about its decision to adopt a controversial severance compensation plan and about the way the board handled failed merger talks with Microsoft. According to the report from the shareholder advisory firm, Yahoo investors should reelect Chief Executive Jerry Yang and seven other directors. The endorsement came on the heels of the board's truce with billionaire activist Carl Icahn, which gave Icahn a seat at the table and allowed him to recommend two other candidates to join him, one of whom is likely to be former AOL Chairman and Chief Executive Jonathan Miller. The settlement also calls for the board to be expanded. RiskMetrics said the settlement should allow the directors to tackle compensation issues and the strategic direction of the struggling Internet company. On Wednesday, Egan-Jones Proxy Services recommended that Yahoo support the Yahoo board at the annual meeting on Aug. 1. It parted company from rival advisory group Glass Lewis & Co., which on Tuesday raked three Yahoo directors over the proverbial coals. Glass Lewis recommended booting Chairman Roy Bostock, above, and directors Ron Burkle and Arthur Kern (both are on the compensation committee), for the aforementioned severance plan, which triggered ...

This may be too late to have any real impact, but it does come as something of a surprise… proxy firm Glass Lewis recommends shareholders vote against the reelection of Yahoo ( NSDQ: YHOO ) Chairman Roy Boystock, and directors Ron Burkle and Arthur Kern. What do the three have in common? As MarketWatch reports, all three were on the compensation committee, which implemented the controversial severance plan. Glass Lewis even described the plan as a "quasi-poison pill." The firm also noted Yahoo execs are paid more than their peers, but that they've performed worse. There sill hasn't been a formal announcement from the other major proxy advisory service, ISS. Could this announcement have made a difference had it come out last week? Maybe. But at this point, with Icahn signed onto the current compromise board, this looks like a technicality. ...

The latest variation on the Microsoft-Yahoo theme comes courtesy of the Wall Street Journal , which is reporting that Microsoft ( NSDQ: MSFT ) is looking for lab partners in some kind of Yahoo dissection. Microsoft has talked to News Corp ( NYSE: NWS ) and Time Warner ( NYSE: TWX ) about possible partnerships, says WSJ; no one seems to actually expect those chats to pan out. Then again, Yahoo is talking to AOL, too, says DJ sib Boomtown . WSJ: "Some of the people familiar with these talks say they are preliminary and unlikely to result in a deal with Yahoo ( NSDQ: YHOO ). Indeed, two weeks ago, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer called Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock to suggest they meet to discuss a new idea involving other partners, according to a person familiar with the matter. The meeting, scheduled for Monday, was subsequently canceled by Microsoft, which Yahoo took as a sign that Mr. Ballmer's efforts to find a partner have so far failed." WSJ says Yahoo in the form of Bostock and indie board member Ron Burkle offered a sale for $33-34 per share in mid-May, weeks after this was all supposed to be over, but Microsoft said no. Lots of details in the article for failed deal gluttons. Meanwhile, the two continue to date others: Yahoo has its deal with Google ( NSDQ: GOOG ), Microsoft is acquiring Powerset.
