Sure, most of us can get pretty fired up over the thought of a monthly 250 GB bandwidth cap, but what about the companies that provide online video services? After all, as Om pointed out, the cap isn’t about excessive bandwidth usage as much as it is about stymieing online video sources like Hulu, Netflix [...] ...

Filed under: Home Entertainment We hear you loud and clear Roku -- now go prove to someone other than Netflix that your box is worth toying with. At the recent Streaming Media West conference, Roku CEO Anthony Wood reiterated details that we already knew: it really, really wants to work with companies other than Netflix. Said Wood, "We're opening up the platform to anyone who wants to put their video service on this box," and he continued by stating that "we're going to release the software developer kit , so anyone can publish any channel, and users can access web content on their TVs." Of course, both Netflix and Roku knew from the get-go that the relationship would involve other partners, though it remains to be seen who's willing to call for seconds at Roku's shindig. Roku is a compelling little device — right now anyway. You see, the living room box streams Netflix “Watch Instantly” films. These are movies and television shows which members of Netflix can watch anytime for free. The mixture of free instantaneous content and a box that costs only $99 is a nice combo. The problem Roku has is that competition from major players is coming at it fast. But rather than sit back and die a slow death, Roku is taking a step in the right direction. It’s opening its platform to make it so that any content provider to use the Roku box in the coming months, Roku chief executive Anthony Wood told Wired . News of Roku expanding its box beyond Netflix content has been known for a while. In fact, back in July I called it a “ living room Trojan horse ” if it could secure content deals with Amazon’s video service (at the time called Unbox, but now called Video On Demand ) and especially the NBC and Fox backed video streaming service Hulu . But this opening of the box to anyone is a new twist. Depending on who actually pledges to develop on it, Roku could once again be more enticing than products like the Apple TV or Vudu. The Apple TV device added move rentals earlier this year and it also can stream video podcasts or any video from YouTube. Vudu also streams movies but it has more recent fare, and more recently added porn — in high definition — to its collection as well. But Roku’s biggest challenge may be Microsoft ...

Roku , makers of the Netflix by Roku set-top box , have announced that they will be making the player open source, giving developers a chance to create open source software for the device. Roku CEO Anthony Wood confirmed the announcement and said the company would release an SDK (software development kit) before the end of the year. The new announcement also means that users will not only be limited to Netflix content anymore and will most likely be able to surf the Internet using the first generation devices. Wood made sure to note that Roku's relationship with Netflix is still sound and the new move will not hurt it. Roku makes all revenue from hardware sales and the company has always said it will be looking for partnerships with any content provider that wants one. Permalink | Comments ...

You might recall that I bought a Roku player a few months ago to make it easier for me to watch high-quality versions of Netflix's Watch Instantly offerings. My biggest complaint about Roku and Watch Instantly was that the selection was pretty slim -- mostly we've used it to watch old TV shows, and even then I suspect we watch more TV on Hulu.com. Watch Instantly has a great selection of low-budget independent features and documentaries, and even some short films, but if you want Hollywood blockbusters you're better off with the DVDs. Fortunately, the Watch Instantly pickings are starting to improve. Netflix has just partnered with Starz Entertainment to offer more than 1,000 movies that Starz has licensed for its own video-on-demand services. Starz already has deals with Disney and Sony, so these movies include a lot of (relatively) newer Hollywood big-budget films, like Ratatouille , Pirates of the Caribbean 3 , No Country for Old Men , and Superbad . These still aren't as recent as the films you can get mailed to you on DVD from Netflix (or rent at your local video store), but it's a significant improvement over the previous Watch Instantly offerings for recent mainstream movies. In addition, Netflix also signed deals last month with the Disney Channel and CBS to add some of their TV shows to the Watch Instantly lineup, like Hannah Montana and CSI . Those aren't movie-related deals, but I got excited because I can now watch th ...
