Good morning to one and all! Before we get started today, a quick announcement: Please send all of your tips to the following email addy: marcelmutoni@gmail.com. Thanks for your cooperation, and now, back to your regularly scheduled programming... The Brett Favre saga has gone on for so long now, that it actually causes physical pain to hear mention of his name. If NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has his way, though, the beginning of the end to the nauseating Favre-Packers standoff will mercifully start early next week. On Monday, the iron-fisted commish expects the two parties to make up their damn minds already. The sources said Goodell feels the situation has gone on long enough and wants both sides to have an incentive to make a decision. One of the sources said no final money figures have been hammered out. "Both parties are talking, the Green Bay Packers and Brett," Goodell said in an interview with the NFL Network on Saturday. "And I think the discussions are moving ahead. I would hope that we would have something resolved by Monday." Pro Football Talk did hear the NFL Network's well-coiffed Adam Schefter say the following, though: "Schefter points out that the decision isn’t final, and that it could change and has changed already. As of right now, however, Favre’s inclination is to take the money and not run. Or throw." In Favre-speak, as we know all too well, it doesn't sound like we're that much closer to a resolution ...

NFL commissioner's role in getting Green Bay to take back Brett Favre is earning him positive reviews from the media. He's in, he's out, he's in, he's Brett Favre, the once and former and maybe once again quarterback of the Green Bay Packers. Favre is the new/old/new guy back in town and apparently owes that to the behind-the-scenes work of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. ...

Dear Roger Goodell- Pardon our ignorance here, but could you possibly explain your new policies to us season-ticket holders? We are confused. We understand that we will no longer be able to sell our tickets to a third party. After two warnings, we lose our tickets. Is this really fair? You approved this? Third parties can't use our stuff? How come Michael Irvin got to blame a pot pipe on a third party, even though it was found in his car? It's OK for him to have third parties as an excuse, but not us? Newsflash Roger- selling tickets at a higher price is the American way of life. Wanna bet if you got a percentage of the profits we made that this wouldn't even be an issue? But sometimes, there are sound reasons for not going to the games. Like our team stinks this year. Let some other poor sucker watch the game. Maybe we lost our job and need the dough? Maybe the babysitter canceled at the last minute. Maybe we are really sick. What the heck is wrong with that? Isn't it better that the NFL is still collecting money from concessions and $8 beers from any fan versus showing empty seats on TV? You also seem to be a little miffed over the behavior of us fans. Drunkeness, foul language and any offensive behavior may result in ejection from the games? Isn't that a little like expecting concertgoers at a gangsta rap concert from refraining from foul language? Just what do you expect from NFL fans? Your players get paid millions to act li ...

Filed under: Lions , NFC North ... yeah, Roger Goodell might have wanted to hammer out his plan for a better-behaved NFL a little more thoroughly. Or he maybe he should have realized that it's impossible to apply a black-and-white rule canopy to a multitude of grays, and, given that fact, that it might be wrong to dole out punishments unfairly and inconsistently. "A" for effort, to be sure, but the execution has been lacking. For example, despite prior claims to the otherwise, Lions rookie tackle Gosder Cherilus will not suffer the wrath of The Rog . Cherilus was recently handed one year of probation and court orders to pay $52,000 in medical expenses incurred when he "intervened" in a bar fight by breaking a man's neck in July 2007. Even though the case was settled after Cherilus became a member of the NFL, he will not be punished, according to league spokesman Greg Aiello, because "incident occurred prior to his NFL career." (Insert "playing in Detroit is punishment enough" joke here.)   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Filed under: Cowboys Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones is participating in training camp and the preseason, even though he's technically still suspended by the NFL: Shortly after Jones was traded from Tennessee to Dallas, Commissioner Roger Goodell told him he could spend the summer with the team, but that didn't mean his suspension -- which began in April of 2007 -- was over. But it could be over very soon. Jones says he's written a letter in which he asks to be reinstated, and he will send the letter to Goodell tomorrow . Assuming the letter doesn't say anything along the lines of, "I look forward to making it rain this season," Goodell is expected to reinstate Jones. And then, finally, for the first time since December of 2006, Jones will be back in the NFL. Jones has played just 28 games in two seasons in his career, and he has a lot of work to do, but I'm looking forward to being able to see Jones play ball -- and to write about what he does on the field for a change.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Filed under: NFL Rumors There was much debate when NFL Commish Roger Goodell threw out the idea of a 17-game NFL schedule . His thinking is that the preseason in a joke, but the owners love having that money made from forcing selling tickets to fans in season ticket packages. I hate the idea for a 17th game for many reasons (you'd blow up the structure of the schedule, it forces half the league to have an extra home/road game). Well, while attending Bengals camp this weekend , Goodell threw out the idea again ... with a new twist: "I've been quite clear publicly and with our membership that I think the quality of the preseason is not up to NFL standards, and that we should address that," Goodell said. "So we're actively evaluating and considering whether we should modify that ratio and make it 17 and 3 as one example where there's an additional regular-season rather than the preseason game. We swap it out (with) the same number of games. I think it's a better reflection on the quality of our game. "I wouldn't rule out 18-2." Hmmm, an 18-game season? I still think that puts a lot of pressure on the players to stay healthy that long. But it has more of a merit than a 17-game season. In the 17-game format, one conference would get the extra home game and they'd switch every year. I hated that because it meant five inter-conference games and how would they figure that? With 18-games, everyone has the same amount of home/road games and ...

Now I get it.  Mike Brown is stupid...stupid like a Fox! ESPN just reported that Chad Johnson's injury is more serious than first revealed.  http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp08/news/story?id=3553260 Johnson has a torn labrum.  Though it is possible to play this season and avoid surgery, Chad will have to wear a harness.  I'll believe that when I see him on the field. Time to get on that reinstatement letter, Mr. Henry.  If Chancellor Goodell will reinstate Pacman Jones after legitimate charges, he should reinstate you after bogus charges were dropped. ...

From a conversation with ESPN's Chris Mortensen this morning: "I got a call late last night telling me the sad news and it was something that was a shock to me. But it was something also that’s probably indicative of the way Gene led his life. He was very quiet and very strong-willed, and pride was a word that I always associated with him. He went his own way. My thoughts and prayers are with Terri and the kidshaven’t given any thought to that. I look at Gene as just a terrific man who’s provided such great leadership to his players. It’s obviously something that we’ll have to deal with, but I’m certain that his legacy and his leadership will live on and hopefully that will be kept strong in everyone’s mind as we go forward and face the issues we need to face going forward." How would you explain who Gene Upshaw was in terms of your dealings with him? "Gene was a guy that had so much respect for the game. His love of the game really dictated everything as it related to how he approached issues. He fought hard for his players, he was fair, and he was respectful to everybody. The thing I always remember about Gene is he always treated me as an individual, somebody with whom he had a good relationship, and he did that with everybody that I saw. I think that’s something that will be a legacy, at least for me, as it relates to Gene Upshaw." Within his own group it seemed like he was under attack for various reasons, including retired player ...

The commissioner pulls no punches when he talks about four games (and, in some cases, five) being too many in the preseason. He'd rather see fewer preseason games and more regular season games. He has floated the idea of adding a 17th regular season game and taking one preseason game away. And now the commish said no one should rule out 18 regular season games and two exhibitions. ...
