Haven't been online much this weekend because I drove up to my friend's place in the Donegal Gaeltacht (Irish speaking area) and he's got this great house surrounded by mountains - the drive there was breathtaking. I went to pick up my bass which he'd had repaired for me, and we spent the weekend playing blues and jamming... (he's a guitarist) - already talking about getting a drummer, and setting up some gigs! As a member of Omni Hotels' frequent-guest program, I get occasional deal breaks and package offers from them in at my home e-mail account. Today, they sent me a serious missive urging support for the Dallas convention center hotel (Omni, along with Marriott, are the only two major chains that submitted proposals to manage the city-owned hotel). The letter urges me to link to the Build the Hotel website and sign a cyber-petition expressing support for the project. From the letter: You may have also heard of another petition by those opposed to the hotel. The petition serves a small handful of companies without communicating a full view of the benefits to the citizens of Dallas and the surrounding Metroplex. The link below will connect you to an article in the Dallas Morning News which provides an interesting and balanced synopsis of the situation. Whaddaya know? The link is to my man Steve's Sunday column, in which he called out Harlan Crow for financing the no-hotel campaign to beat back competition to his own Anatole. Interestingly, the Omni chain is owned by a large-pockets, if rarely seen Dallas Big Dog, too: under-the-radar billionaire Robert Rowling. By Kate Sheppard Thursday night's vice presidential debate produced several rows on climate and energy policy, with both candidates making somewhat unexpected claims on their own policy positions. Notably, however, both Joe Biden and Sarah Palin acknowledged that climate change is real and must be addressed -- though they clearly didn't agree fully on what's causing it or what should be done. For enviro viewers, perhaps Palin's biggest moment came when she was asked directly about climate change. She said that emissions should be cut while also calling for more drilling and again disputing whether all of global warming is caused by humans (she's offered a range of statements on this subject in the past). Asked directly whether she supports a cap on carbon emissions, Palin responded, "Yes, Sen. McCain does support this." While Palin didn't say whether she supports a cap, she did say that she thinks climate change should be addressed: As the nation's only Arctic state and being the governor of that state, Alaska feels and sees impacts of climate change more so than any other state. And we know that it's real. I'm not one to attribute every man -- activity of man to the changes in the climate. There is something to be said also for man's activities, but also for the cyclical temperature changes on our planet. But there are real changes going on in our climate. Need a reason to rock out?  “To Write Love On Her Arms,” a movement dedicated to raising awareness for depression and its related issues is hosting a benefit concert, Rock for Rescue, Wednesday night.  Volunteer Jarrett Moore says the charity is hosting a concert because it is a great outlet in reaching people and a lot of kids have been able to receive the help they needed. “Two-thirds of teenagers with depression never get treated,” Moore says. “So it’s a very quick direct way to get information to them and it’s a free rock concert.” The concert will feature several Christian bands including Wavorly , EleventySeven , Lost and Found , NoiseGate , Leaving Araby and Becky Knight . A suggested donation of five dollars can be made at the door with all proceeds going to benefit “To Write Love On Her Arms.” Moore stresses that depression affects everybody and “To Write Love On Her Arms” is helping in addressing the issue. “It’s not just a white issue, or an ‘emo’ issue, or just an American issue, it’s a global problem that needs to be addressed,” Moore adds. The bands will be rocking it out at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Student Center in Opelika from 6 to 9 p.m. ...

After a good night's sleep I was off again. My first stop was Bridgeport, Texas   , home of the elusive toll bridge. In 1860, Colonel W.H. Hunt   built a toll bridge that spanned the Trinity River, mainly for the Butterfield Stage. Apparently, the bridge is no more   . At least no one at the local gas station has heard of it. I made a valiant effort to find that bridge, but I could not. However, there are bridges in Bridgeport   . In fact, they are darn serious about bridges in Bridgeport. At the park, near downtown, there are no less than three bridges — huge, bright red, through-truss bridges. We also found the largest rocking chair I've ever seen, right on Main Street. After leaving Bridgeport it was a short ride to Jacksboro, Texas,   the county seat of Jack County, Texas   . When Waterman Ormsby came through Jacksboro 150 years ago today, on the first Overland trip, Jacksboro was only a year old   . According to Ormsby, the town had only a dozen houses, but nearly 200 inhabitants. Today, if I didn't know any better, I would swear there were less than 200! There was hardly a soul in downtown Jacksboro   when we stopped, except for an occasional truck (the official vehicle of Texas). However, across the street from the courthouse   , there were some really amazing stone buildings in differing states of disrepair. From the back I noticed that they were in fact facades .
