CNET sister-site Gamespot is reporting that Instruments for the games Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero: World Tour will work universally with either title on PlayStation 3. In addition, the peripherals will also work with games like Rock Revolution and SingStar . SCEA director of publisher relations Michael Shorrock was quoted ... ...

No, I am not lying, I am not being sensational, this is what was told to MTV Multiplayer . I have been sitting on this news since yesterday and I cannot take it anymore, because I don’t know whether to be excited or a bit pissed off about it. Stephen Totilo was at Activision’s unofficial E3 press conference Tuesday evening and like everyone else there he heard that Guitar Hero: World Tour would be compatible with non-GH Instruments. Ok, so that piqued his interest enough that he sought out some clarification from two Activision reps that were standing by. By the gaming gods, these wonderful Activision representatives confirmed that “the age of cross-game instrument incompatibility is nearing its end”, and supposedly the Xbox 360 version of GH: World Tour will be compatible with Instruments from the first Rock Band. No tests have been made for Rock Band 2 due to the fact that neither game has come out yet, but other third-party drum sets will work with GHWT as well. Here is where I get a bit annoyed. Activision will not comment on whether this compatibility applies to Wii, PS2 and PS3 versions of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, but at the same time another rep told Stephen that “a recent auto-downloaded title update to the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith should make that game compatible with non-GH guitars, including the Rock Band ones.” Great news, hip hip hooray, right? Maybe. Here is the rub - the new Instruments for GHWT ...

LOS ANGELES -- Own Rock Band Instruments on Xbox 360? They'll work with Guitar Hero World Tour . At Activision's E3 press conference Tuesday, Guitar Hero director Brian Bright told the crowd that if they already owned guitar controllers and drum controllers from "previous games" on the Xbox 360, they'd work with Guitar Hero World Tour . What Activision didn't say is how that will actually work, considering that Rock Band drums have four pad inputs and Guitar Hero World Tour has five. There's also a MIDI jack on the back of the drum kit, Bright said, which will allow gamers to play Guitar Hero with any electronic drum kit by simply plugging it into the controller. You can also hook up a second drum pedal if you want to play two bass drums. Image: Activision ...

Filed under: Gaming It's sad that the petty bickering between Activision, Harmonix, and Konami required console makers to step up and ensure that gamers didn't end up with piles of redundant plastic instrument controllers, but things are starting to get better -- just as Sony did yesterday , Microsoft announced that it's requiring Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Revolution to be cross-compatible on the Xbox 360. The post on Redmond's Gamerscore blog isn't chock-full of details, but we'll commend Microsoft and Sony for getting involved to make sure that all the lawsuits and infighting don't adversely affect their customers -- now if they could only find a way to make those drumkits actually fit into a living room, we'd be all set. Rock Band 2 project manager Brian Bright doesn't have a lot of faith in the Instruments Activision and Red Octane will be shipping with competitor Guitar Hero: World Tour . "They can pick up the standalone version of World Tour and use those Instruments, and when they break they can buy ours," Bright told Kotaku. Sony and Microsoft recently claimed that Instruments from both games would be cross-compatible on their consoles, making Bright's claims technically possible, though one wonders if Bright's comments should be seen as sour grapes aimed at Activision's attempt at aping Rock Band's multi-instrument format. Still, rhythm game fans should just be happy that they have the option now. Exclusive peripherals only benefit the manufacturers and simply serve to break the bank for consumers. After bickering between Activision and Harmonix meant you couldn't use Guitar Hero's guitars with Rock Band on the PS3 ('cause Activision wanted moolah for Harmonix to release the patch), Sony has grabbed them both firmly by the nuts and said "everybody's Instruments must work with everybody's games." This means that Guitar Hero: World Tour's insane kit —guitars and drums—will work with Rock Band 2's and vice versa (and Konami's Rock Revolution series). Some of the advanced game-specific features might not work (like maybe the touch features on GH:WT's guitar), but basic compatibility will be there. They're working on making stuff already out there (GH3 and RB) play nice too. All I have to say is you Rock, Sony. [ PlayStation Blog via Kotaku ] ...

At Activision’s unofficial E3 press conference Tuesday evening, one of the developers of this fall’s “ Guitar Hero: World Tour ” made a quick comment to the crowd about the new “GH” game being compatible with non-”GH” Instruments. Later, I asked for clarification. Two Activision representatives confirmed that the age of cross-game instrument incompatibility is nearing its end. They explained that the Xbox 360 version of “Guitar Hero: World Tour” will indeed be compatible with the Instruments for the first “ Rock Band .” The “GH” developers have, for obvious reasons, not been able to test their new game with the upcoming “ Rock Band 2 .” Other third-party guitar and drum controllers are expected to work with “GH: World Tour” as well. Activision isn’t ready to address whether the instrument compatibility applies to Wii, PS2 and PS3 versions of “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band.” But a rep told me that a recent auto-downloaded title update to the Xbox 360 version of “ Guitar Hero: Aerosmith ” should make that game compatible with non-”GH” guitars, including the “Rock Band” ones. This is what people were demanding, no? ...

A normal game demo features a kiosk, maybe a couch, and it's all a pretty ho hum experience save for the fact that you're usually playing a game that won't be released for anywhere from a several months to a few years. But when testing out Rock Band 2, it's set up on a stage with professional lights, mixing boards and speakers. And, of course, their add-on fog machine. It all reminded me how freaking expensive this whole music game madness has become, but also just how far it had come. Seeing the full-sized Fender/Squire branded Rock Band guitar/base is kind of a trip, too. At first I thought the display case was just showing off their touted new guitar alongside a full sized guitar. Nope. Those full-sized, true wood Instruments had subtly incorporated buttons. And Harmonix's new guitar looked like the same thing made for a kid (even if a closer inspection reveals the wood is, of course, veneer). Playing on the new guitar wasn't quite as different as I'd expected it. The fret buttons feel identical to the current Rock Band guitar. But a difference can be felt in the strum bar, a magnet-based system redesigned to be tougher and more accurate. It just felt right, with double strum timing that was right on. The biggest improvement, however, was one I could have never seen with my own eyes. An integrated light sensor and mic allow automatic timing calibration with any television. So you always know that it's you, not the game, that i ...

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3 , Microsoft Xbox 360 , Online , Rhythm Online mega retailer Amazon.com has listed a standalone wireless drum set and wireless guitar for Rock Band 2 on Xbox 360 for $90 and $70, respectively. Of course, the bundled Xbox 360 guitar with the original Rock Band was tethered to the console and the drums were wired on all platforms, so we're hopeful this means the Instruments included in Rock Band 2's big bundle will all be wireless. A Harmonix representative informs us that no prices, shipping dates, colors, astrological signs, or further details concerning Rock Band 2 will be released until next week's E3.
