I would like to briefly introduce ASIMO to those who dont know it yet. As a quick background information, ASIMO is a humanoid robot created by Honda Motor Company. It is 130 centimeters tall and 54 kilograms. The robot resembles a small astronaut wearing a backpack and can walk or run on two feet at speeds up to 6 km/h. ASIMO was created at Honda's Research and Development Technical Research Center in Japan. The name ASIMO is an acronym for "Advanced Step in Innovative MObility". ASIMO is taught different activities from walking, running and humour. And amazingly it performs all those activities well. The most recent one is conducting an orchestra. The reason I enjoy this and highlight it here is that it is amazing to see technology and art merged like this. If a robot can conduct a symphony orchestra, imagine the possibilities for our business! ... Source: blog.makezine.com --- 8 days ago

A leather-clad Common, Pharrell (or probably just some dude) in a robot head, and a lot of "abstract" black and white computer graphix: the video for "Universal Mind Control"—which leaked way back in May —is either "stark" or "cost-effective." All I know is those glowing red robot eyes are going to haunt my dreams tonight, much as Pharrell's vocoder hook is going to haunt me for the rest of the day. [ Nah Right ] ... The cofounder and chief technical officer of iRobot, the company that brought robotic vacuums to the homes of millions of consumers, is leaving to start another venture. Rodney Brooks launched Bedford, Mass.-based iRobot in 1991 with Colin Angle and Helen Grenier, his former students. The roboticist plans to spend time with his new startup, Heartland Robotics, a Cambridge, Mass.-based industrial Robotics company. Heartland is not considered a competitor, according to iRobot. Brooks, in a phone interview with us, said he can't provide great detail about the new company just yet, but Heartland will focus on robots in manufacturing. Asked if the proposed robots would be developed to replace assembly-line workers, Brooks said, "PCs did not replace the office worker, and this is not about that at all." Brooks has also taken a leave of absence from his teaching role at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to concentrate on Heartland and recruit employees. "I'm on leave effective Monday, so I can put my heart and soul into this," he said. "We need some time to get stuff together." Since Brooks was not able to talk about his departure until now, he is still ironing out his future role with iRobot's management team. Brooks will remain on the board of directors and work with the company to form a new technical advisory committee. "We decided that that's my task at iRobot," he said. A new CTO is expected to be named next year. No Rookie To R ...

A New England Robotics In Education Conference will be held Oct. 25 at the Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School. The event, “Robotics Inside Out,” is being jointly sponsored by the high school’s TJ 2 Robotics Team and The National Robotics Education Foundation. Open to educators in grades K-12 and interested parents, the event will focus on bringing Robotics efforts to additional children in the New England area. This program will feature methodologies for installing curriculum enhancements, reducing the costs of purchasing supplies, implementing programs for after-school Robotics activities designed to benefit New England children. Participants will also gain hands-on experience with “Lego Mindstorms NXT.” The morning keynote address will be from Dan Ward, a community college Robotics education professor. He has developed and fostered funding avenues through state training programs in five other states in addition to his native Indiana. Other speakers will include, high school teachers, experienced fundraisers, students, parents, college and university faculty, and surprise industry experts. There will be ongoing demonstrations by students using several different Robotics programs and concepts. They will also create tie-dye T-shirts, and conduct tours of the high school’s Robotics room. The full day program includes a continental breakfast, lunch, demonstrations from other Robotics suppliers, including life size robots, and ... Source: www.ecnasiamag.com --- 6 days ago
