Tiny Robotic Hand has the gentlest touch Computer-controlled tweezers have a rudimentary sense of touch that helps them grasp delicate objects such as living cells Breaking News - 17 April 2008 ... Source: blog.wired.com --- 1 day ago
What makes a Hand so versatile? Fingers come to mind first -- but as designers of robot arms have learned, said neurobotics pioneer Yoky Matsuoka, the Hand is just as much about the palm. Specifically, the palm's flexibility -- a quality I'd never even considered until she mentioned it and I tried to use my Hand while keeping my palm stiff.Inflexible palms were a downfall of early attempts at mechanically mimicking our hands, said Matsuoka during her talk at the New Yorker Stories From the Near Future conference. She recently designed the Anatomically Correct Testbed Robotic Hand, pictured above -- as close in form and function to a real Hand as scientists have yet come. While she talked, I thought of the Cheetah legs used by would-be Olympian Oscar Pistorius. Unlike Matsuoka's Hand, these seem less like an attempted duplication and more like an intended improvement on nature's original design. Is that the case? I'm going to try and ask Matsuoka -- but in the meantime, if any WiSci readers know, comment away. By DAVID FAUCHEUX From the New Scientist news service , April 4, 2008... " The 'McSig,' a forced-feedback pen, has been developed by University of Glasgow researchers to help blind and visually impaired children write clearly and consistently by gently guiding their Hand. In addition to haptic feedback, the system offers audio cues, with stereo sound panning to the left and right as the pen moved horizontally..." This Georgia Tech robot looks like an idea that will work in the real world - at least on flat floors. Laser pointers work well for communicating to a helper monkey. Applied to a Robotic helper the technique can eliminate the need for a static spatial map of the environment. A new robot from Georgia Tech [...] ... Source: gadgetbay.blogspot.com --- 27 days ago

As you may have heard by now, we tonight announced Brett Favre as our cover athlete for Madden NFL 09 . Brett unveiled the new packaging on The Late Show with David Letterman, and I was proud to be present at the taping to see the announcement first Hand. It is with great pride that we take the bold step of featuring a retired player on the front of packaging, an honor normally reserved for a player at the peak of his game. I say with great pride, because some may question the marketing strategy behind this (and many at EA did just that, quite frankly). I don't for one minute. In this, the 20th year of this storied game franchise, as far as I was concerned there was only one choice. As we look back over the past couple of decades in the NFL, Brett stands out to me personally as a beacon for everything that made me a huge fan of this great game from almost the moment I arrived from the UK in the early eighties (and became a fan of the LA Rams, with Vince Ferragamo at QB, but that’s a story for another posting…). Forget all of his record-breaking stats – it was his approach to every game he played, his leadership and spirit on the field, his “gun-slinger” style in an era of Robotic QB’s, and most of all the way he wore his heart on his sleeve for us all to see. I can’t forget the Monday night game versus the Raiders the night after his father unexpectedly died, when he threw for 399 yards and four touchdowns. Unless you were wea ...

Two fan favorite titles have recently found their way onto the PlayStation Portable's Greatest Hit list: Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters and Killzone: Liberation . Whether you're new to either series or just want to take a walk down memory lane, this is definitely a good time to revisit both games for the handheld. You can relive all the fun moments of taking out hordes of Technomites in Ratchet & Clank using all those weapons and gadgets at your disposal. On the other Hand, if taking on covert operations and saving hostages is your thing then Killzone : Liberation should definitely be an enjoyable title to play with its new budget price. Whether you feel like taking on an army of Robotic critters or squads real-life military troops, both titles are currently being offered at the rock bottom price of US 19.99 . This offer is definitely a good way to introduce those who missed playing either title when they first came out, so go ahead and order them from your favorite retail store. ...

I was surfing the web looking for a Robotic vaccum cleaner. Thy don't sell Roomba in Europe (a WTF in itself) so I was looking for info on an Electrolux Trilobite. I found it being sold on a local eshop and since I found the product there I used their search function to look for a Roomba (just in case). No luck so I looked around a bit and then entered 'trilobite' in the search field to go back. No product found. Odd. I went back via back button and copy-pasted the product name in the search field and this time it found it. I typed it by Hand and it didn't. Turns out the product name on their page was in uppercase and I was typing in lowercase. Their search engine is case-sensitive. ...

Able to lift 1,000kg and with a reach of 3.2m, you could say the KUKA Robotic arm is being put to waste when wielding a tennis racquet or sword for an intense Wii session. In the video above, you can see a couple of chaps controlling the KUKA with a Wiimote, which has been hacked with some light pattern recognition so it'd duplicate their arm swings. The instructions on how to create a Wiimote controlled KUKA are over on their site, but first you'll need to cough up a fair bit - here's a second-Hand one on eBay for $10k... ... From the Secret Handshake’s Robotic, Cher-doing-”Believe” vocals to Jeffree Star’s campy electrosex grooves, for me the best part of Bamboozle Left Day 2 was the inclusion of electronica hybrid bands. This looks like the poster for an awesome science fiction film that we'd like to see: a girl in a giant hulking exoskeletal suit of armor with her comic-effect tiny little Robotic pal perched on her shoulder. You've got evil signified by the pouring lava on the left Hand side of the background, while fighters triumphantly scream past a proud city on the right. Whatever is happening here, we want to know more. Sadly, it's not a movie poster. It's the personal creation of visual artist Yanick Dusseault, who provided concept art on GATTACA , 3D work on Titan AE, and painted matte paintings on everything from Star Wars to The Island . Somehow, he also manages to find time to work on an impressive array of his own personal artwork (like this piece), which can be seen at his website . ...
