The public has a big appetite for news about the lives of the Obama family. They recently allowed their two young daughters to be interviewed with them on TV; later presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) said it was a mistake. Michelle Obama talks to ABC's Robin Roberts about putting the kids in the public eye. MS. Roberts: But one thing's for certain: the public's and media's appetite for the Obamas. The couple's still feeling their way on how much is too much when it comes to their two young daughters. MS. OBAMA: I think we're all figuring this out, and I've had an opportunity to talk to people who've done this before. I had a great conversation with Hillary Clinton. I also talked to Tipper Gore -- lots of folks who have had great advice on how do you make sure that your kids are whole and grounded. And part of it is keeping them -- keeping their worlds very much their own. So we're learning and growing and figuring it out, and making some decisions and changing our minds and moving forward.-- Transcript courtesy Federal News Service. I have a friend who hates my use of the word “awesome.” She prefers to reserve it for things she deems to be truly awe-inspiring. She wouldn’t have the least objection, though, to my using the word to describe Robin Roberts . My love for Robin goes back to the first time I saw her during a women’s basketball broadcast on ESPN. It was in 1990, shortly after the Lady Vols had proven to me what an idiot I was for not appreciating the game earlier. Robin quickly became my favorite commentator, not only because she’s absolutely gorgeous, but also because she loves the game. And it’s obvious that those who play the game love her — last week, the WNBA let Roberts know what she meant to professional women's basketball by presenting her with the 2008 WNBA Inspiration Award . In case you are a Today Show -watcher and don’t know, Roberts is co-anchor of Good Morning America with Diane Sawyer — they are the first female pair to host a morning show. Between her Emmy Award-winning tenure at ESPN and her GMA audience, Roberts has developed quite a following. So, when she went public about her diagnosis with breast cancer last year, the outpouring of support was immediate and dramatic. (Kleenex alert!) read more ...

Filed under: Democrats , Barack Obama Michelle Obama, wife of presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama, has been out of the spotlight for some time, but has been spending time with military families all over the country. She spent yesterday with ABC's Robin Roberts, and they filmed an interview which is airing in 3 parts. . Michelle seems more reserved during this appearance, and a little bit weary. Although you could chalk it up to the campaign, it really seems as though hearing from these struggling military families is affecting her deeply. Here are the first two parts of that interview. The third airs tonight on Nightline. And here's part two:   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Defiant and courageous, Christina Applegate opened up for the first time about her difficult decision to have her breasts removed following her cancer diagnosis. "I had a prophylactic double mastectomy," she told "Good Morning America" host Robin Roberts. "I wanted to be rid of it for me so this was the choice I made and it was a tough one." The "Samantha Who?" actress also described her initial reaction to the shocking diagnosis -- and her healing process. "Sometimes I scream and I get really angry and I get really like, you know into wallowing in self-pity sometimes and I think that's -- it's all part of healing." Roberts, also a breast cancer survivor, told "Extra" that Christina's vigilance in screening for the disease saved her life. "She was taking care of herself and that's so key -- especially when you know it's in your family," she said. Applegate is scheduled to appear on the TV special "Stand Up to Cancer" on September 5. [Note: NB's Scott Whitlock posted the below just over a year ago on July 31, 2007.] On Tuesday’s "Good Morning America," anchors Robin Roberts and Diane Sawyer touted the marital relationship between Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards and his wife. Co-host Robin Roberts recounted the often repeated story of how the Edwards couple spend their wedding anniversary, including their recent 30th, at the restaurant Wendy’s. Roberts, perhaps in a Freudian slip, even referred to the former North Carolina Senator as " presidential nominee John Edwards ." Sawyer gushed that the candidate and his wife "are going to renew their vows." "Happy anniversary," she added. Yet, this is the same morning show that has vastly underplayed stories that aren’t quite so cute and endearing for the '08 contender. For instance, during a recent GMA town hall with John Edwards on the subject of poverty, Ms. Sawyer only managed to mention the trial lawyer’s 28,000 square-foot mansion once. After an admittedly tough question (from an audience member) about Edwards’s $400 haircut, Sawyer observed, " ...You have a big house that you're building ..." However, considering that the subject matter, and that the ex-Senator received 38 minutes of air time, one would assume it would get greater prominence. "Good Morning America" has also downplayed the fact that Edwards, who is on a "national poverty tour," sold his former Georgetown house for $5.2 million . GM ...

Olympics? ABC would dearly love you to forget about them, and one stop on the road to forgetfulness happens tomorrow, Aug. 7, when Michelle Obama shows up at "GMA" and "Nightline" for what the network is billing as a "wide-ranging" interview; Robin Roberts does the honors. ("GMA" is calling this exclusive, but MO does seem to be a little more visible, and even "Rachael Ray" was promoting a forthcoming interview a little while ago.) Per ABC: "Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts will spend the day with Michelle Obama ... for exclusive behind the scenes access as she campaigns in Virginia. In the wide-ranging interview, the two will discuss Ms. Obama’s role as a working mother, her thoughts on becoming the possible First Lady, women’s issues, and life on the campaign trail." Airs first on "GMA," then a larger outtake on tomorrow's "Nightline." ...

In an interview airing Tuesday morning on ABC's "Good Morning America," Christina Applegate declares that she has won her brief battle with breast cancer, but that she had to make the dramatic decision to have both of her breasts removed to increase the chances that it would not return. "My decision after looking at all the treatment plans that were possibilities for me, the only one that seemed the most logical, and the one that was going to work for me, was to have a bilateral mastectomy," she tells Robin Roberts . She says she decided to make that decision to increase her chances that the cancer would not return. "I didn't want to go back to the doctors every four months," she says. "I wanted to be rid of it. For me this was the choice I made and it was a tough one." Although she knows she made the right decision, she still finds her self breaking down at times. "Sometimes I cry and sometimes I scream and I get really angry," she says. "It's all a part of healing and anyone who's going through out there, it's okay to cry. It's okay to fall on the ground and just scream if you want to." But things are looking up for the actress, who says in the interview that she's now cancer free. "Absolutely 100 percent clear and clean," she says. "They got everything out, so I'm definitely not going to die from breast cancer." The full interview will air on "Good Morning America" on Tuesday at 7 a.m. [Read full story on The Insider] ...
