PITTSBURGH -- Had some minutes to kill here in the Steel City -- but not enough to finish writing about a visit to Engine House 25 and the Roberto Clemente Museum (that will, fittingly, come tomorrow) -- and that was when I received an email from friend, fellow Picayune alum, and Cardinals' fan, Ben Hochman . He covers the NBA, so he's got plenty of time to surf the Web. (Ha.) His email included just a YouTube link, one... ...

Any time you have the opportunity to make a difference in this world, and you don't do it, you are wasting your time on this earth. — Roberto Clemente The fate of humanity is in the hands of a child. — Abraham Lincoln Both of the above quotes appear on the Web pages for La Liga de Beisbol Roberto Clemente, which brings and teaches baseball to some of the poorest children in central Lawrence. When you see the goals of the Roberto Clemente League, and you know the humanitarian work of the late Pittsburgh Pirates star, it’s no surprise that his quote is above that of the former U.S. president. Clemente fought for better treatment of Latino baseball players in the 1960s, and fought against the corruption of Latin American governments and paid out of his own pocket to extend the humanitarian aid Latinos were not receiving from these governments. He is a hero to Latinos around the world, including Lawrence. Ivan Rodriguez was the steady hand for the Florida Marlins when they won the 2003 World Series. A year later, he was the spark that helped turn around the Detroit franchise when nobody wanted to be a Tiger. The New York Yankees hope he can be a little of both during their push to the playoffs. The Yankees acquired the 14-time All-Star from the Tigers on Wednesday in exchange for hard-throwing reliever Kyle Farnsworth, a trade that filled glaring holes for both contenders. “Honestly, I was shocked by this, but that’s baseball,” Rodriguez said. “Now, I’m just looking forward to playing for the Yankees and maybe I will play against Detroit again in the playoffs.” In the option year of a $50 million deal he signed with the Tigers in February 2004, Rodriguez will step into the hole in the Yankees’ lineup created by Jorge Posada’s shoulder injury. Posada had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Wednesday and is out for the season. The 36-year-old Rodriguez, who has won the Gold Glove award 13 times, was hitting .295 with five homers in 82 games this season. Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente and Rodriguez are the only three players in baseball history with at least 12 Gold Gloves and a career .300 average or better. Rodriguez has caught 2,142 games, trailing only Carlton Fisk (2,226) and Bob Boone (2,225) in terms of longevity behind the plate. “He’s still an everyday guy,” Yankees manager Brian Cashman said. “He’s an up ... Photo: Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto, left, and Mexico's Antonio Margarito at a news conference in Mexico City, May 19. In the world of sports there's only one thing that parallels the accomplishment of reaching ultimate supremacy in the form of a championship. That one thing is, always has been, and always will be, the passionate feeling relative to defeating an arch nemesis....... .....The ring-wars between the two nations technically got under way back in October of 1978 when famed Puerto Rican Wilfred Gomez set out to defeat the once-thought-to-be unstoppable Carlos Zarate, who remains the only boxer in history to put together two streaks of 20 or more knockouts. The winner of 55 fights in a row with all but one coming by way of KO, never in a million years did anyone think - despite his greatness - that Wilfred Gomez would be able to pull off the victory. This would be Zarate's first fight in a new weight class four pounds north of his comfort zone, and shortly after the bell rang, standing in the ring under a blazing tropical sun in Puerto Rico's Roberto Clemente Coliseum, he quickly realized that there's no place like home as he suffered his first lost in his pro career in a devastating fashion on foreign sand in the island of Puerto Rico. Over the years, other great Mexican-Puerto Rican wars would later manifest. Among the best of the many would be Benitez-Palomino, Pintor-Gomez, Gomez-Sanchez, and subsequently the Chavez-Cam ... Last year my family and I went to Rangers home series right before the All Star break. I remember asking my son, who was almost four at the time, who his favorite Rangers were (his favorite player is Roberto Clemente). He told me Mark Teixeira, Kenny Loftin, and Eric Gagne. Last year was the first season that my son was really old enough to have favorite players. Before that every time a player with a darker skin was up he thought it was Soriano and all the white players were Hank Blalock. Needless to say, last year was a tough trading deadline for him. It was not easy telling him his guys were traded away. I remember how I felt being 12 and the Rangers trading away ruben Sierra, but at least he was my favorite Ranger and as a kid I was excited about Jose Conseco coming to Texas. This year if you ask him who his favorite player is, he would quickly tell you, Jarrod Saltalamacchia. He says it quite well, I must admit. As you know, it is looking like Salts days may be numbered. I know there are some other dads here with kids of all ages. Have any of you experienced anything like this? How have yall explained it to your kids? By the way, I am hoping he doesn't start rooting too hard for Ian Kinsler or Josh Hamilton. I may have to make up some stuff about them, like they kick dogs and they hate Star Wars. ...
